Another thing to consider is Steam/PC gaming. While Steam has 40+ million users you have to wonder how many of them buy $50 titles at launch on Steam.
I think developers are in for a rude awakening if they think digital only/no used copies is a good thing. Sales won't increase much at all, because a pirate will still find a way around to getting the game.
I buy 80% of my games new and when they are usually discounted (So far KOF13, SF X Tekken, Halo 4, Borderlands 2 and Mass Effect 3 will be the only games I buy at release from this and last year) , but those 20% I buy used are because they are drastically cheaper. When you throw in a gamer pass for $20 or so my gaming collection will most likely drop, and the developers will also not see a dime from me DLC wise. Why is they always forget that they make money on DLC? Saints Row 3 has a lot of DLC already, and they will lose out on a few dollars there alone if no one can buy a pre-owned copy and do some DLC.
It's just that simple.
