Forums - Microsoft - Volition dev: next Xbox not playing pre-owned games would be "fantastic"

Well f*ck you Volition then. 'nuff said.

I'll gladly enjoy your games used.

That's it, I won't be buying any Volition games new anymore.

If that would happen, that would also mean that you couldn't get your hands on old (xbox3) games anymore, because they are locked to an account or console. Any game that isn't sold in stores anymore won't be acquirable anymore. That makes me a sad panda.

Instead of stopping used game sales they should include a code for a certain weapon or something. If all new copies of Gears had a dlc code to enable the use of other weapons apart from the lancer, Halo needed a code to enable shields, forza needed a code to use cars above class a and things like that. The games remain playable but are far from ideal, meaning people are more likely to pay £5-£10 to unlock them.

Yes this would be great news for developers. But the methods he mentioned sound like a total pain in the ass. Entering all these codes temporarily transferring the license.

I have an idea how to fix this easy.

When you sell your game new the game has a limit of.five consoles it can be played on. The owner can play the game on his console no problem he can even lend it out. If he has only used it on two consoles he can sell the game to a friend. But Ebgames and used copy retailers couldn't sell the games. Ebgames couldn't test the game on a console.or they would use up a try. So Ebgames would have a problem they couldn't sell used copies if the game might not play. Now say you have used it five times and want to use it on additional hardware, go onto an online store and purchase additional uses these uses may sell for 5.99$ or so. To prevent retailers from selling the game used and expecting the user to pay every time they use it on a new console. This would be very easy to do and a no brained no codes no hassle.

Then rental, easy the manufacturer sends out rental copies of the game to major rental companies. Rental copies would include demos of other games your publisher is working on and commercials for those games that play before the game boots. Like a movies trailers. Then the game would he full length but lack some features the retail copy has. Maybe some DLC like content on the retail disk is absent. Before and after completion the game will tell you about the bonus content available in the retail version.

This way you cut out the used games retailer and you not only include the rental places but you use them to promote your products. Plus if someone sells the game used after five uses the developer makes 5.99$ to compensate for their lost sale.

It would be a win win!

Actually thekitchensink I know for a fact back in the PSOne days publishers were complaining about used and rental copies. Not as publicly but my buddies dad worked for a rental chain and I believe it was Nintendo required them to sell their products if they wanted to rent. Or Nintendo would do everything they could to keep them from getting copies or support from Nintendo.

I know the rental place constantly got complaints. Even got told they were selling the product to cheap.

All I know is this is not a new issue. Yes we are hearing about it more now because earlier their was nothing that could be done to stop used games from being sold at retail. Now however the technology exists and their is no reason to continue supporting GameStop in their campaign to milk consumers and manufacturers.

P.S if you buy a used game from a retailer it always comes with a quality guarantee. If the disk is scratched you can return it when I used to buy used games I returned them all the time if they were scratched. If the game doesn't have a manual as far as I know many retailers will not sell it. The package well back when they were boxes it was a big issue but the packages now are very durable rarely damaged.

The game itself doesn't change with time. You are getting the same experience the new customer gets.

So what would happen if you have bought 20+ games and your console RROD´s or something similar?

You have to buy all the games again for the new console?

lol, Microsoft doesnt even give a shit about getting online pass in games why would they care about this... If they care they would already have updated 360 to have this AND they had already included online pass in every single game wich isnt the case.

i call bullshit on this.

It would certainly not be "fantastic". If that were the case I would seriously consider not getting the next Xbox (Halo 5/6 would have to be seriously amazing)

That Voilition developer is seriously naive if he believes that is a good thing.

I can get into MS, Ninty and Sony not wanting people to be able to hire games for 5 euros a week.. that is very hurtfull.. but if you purchase a copy of a game it is your property (the disc itself not what is on it) and you should be able to sell it.

The online pass introduction is the worst thing Sony has done this gen IMO. Doing this would not only cause a ton of legal problems but it might cost Microsoft everything they have earned so far this gen.

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Yes. Think of the children that they have to feed. Their lives depend on you rebuying all the games again.

And if you don't, they'll just do a remake or 10.
