Forums - Microsoft Discussion - IGN: Xbox 720 Will Be Six Times as Powerful as Current Gen

Sounds reasonable. If this is the case, we can expect the Wii U to be the new system developers try to make their games fit onto and then port from.

Love and tolerate.

How can they talk about Wii U's power if they don't know anything?

They arre probably basing it off of the Wii U's rumored specs, and since the Wii U, and this rumor points to variations of the same GPU, I'd say the power comparison is pretty accurate.

I think its a smart move.

It wont be stupid expensive on release (PS3) and will be closer to the WiiU than Wii/PS360 this gen.

I approve.

Im waiting on Sony announcing that the PS5 (they are skipping the PS4 didnt you know?) Will be over 9000x more powerful.

Interesting ...

... and to think that all those people who argued with me that Sony and/or Microsoft could release a console which was in the same performance league as the Wii U.

People are still not getting it. There will not be an enormous leap in consoles this upcoming generation. The only big jump/improvement will be the WiiU, going from DVD based to HD. There is absolutely no surprise that the Nextbox could only be 20% more powerful than WiiU.

We have hit the roadblock this upcoming generation, games will only be able to put out 1080P graphics, because that's the best televisions we have now. The successor to 1080P televisions could be years away.

You can add as much CPU, GPU RAM, Processor all you want, the end result will be 1080p games. Sure the games will be sharper, bigger and 60fps....but the difference will not be as much as some people expect/hope.

Didn't IGN say something about 3DS being near PS3 Power be for it was announced? lol or was that some one else?

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

6 times is not a lot. 720p30 to 1080p60 requires 4.5 times as many pixels to render. Add 3D and you need 9 times the current power. Most games don't even make 720p30 atm. If true, I guess 1080p60 tv's will still be under utilized next gen, never mind 3D at 1080p60.
If you apply Moore's law while looking at a 2013 release date we should get 16 times the power of current gen.

Let's hope they at least stick a decent amount of ram in there this time and an ssd drive for caching.

doubt it

Why would they use a modified 6670 when a 7970m uses less power and is at least twice as powerful? If they want a low power chip going for a low end desktop GPU is stupid when the low power low heat mobile GPUs exist.

If the other rumor is true, and the GPU is integrated on the CPU, they might be using an older GPU because it was the best option when they began the work needed to design an integrated chip ...

4K TVs will be available this year and with a 6x more powerful console games would still be 720p for the most part...

Also you can have 2 games at the same resolution and framerate and one look 10x better than the other, you talk as if resolution is the only thing that increases...
