Anything higher than 349 seems unrealistic for me. graphically it seems to be on par with the PS3 and 360, and they're both going for 249 (If you buy the Kinect bundle). I don't think people are willing to spend more than 100 $ or € more for an equal HD console + touchscreen interface/controller. Obviously there must a way to connect a second controller (how else are gonna play multiplayer?) and charging more than $100 for a controller?...nah, unlikely.

So what do we get? $249 console + $100 controller = $349. But who knows? Maybe Nintendo does another 3DS and adds a hefty profit on it?

I seriously doubt the Wii U will be on par with current HD consoles in terms of power. Do you have any evidence to support your claim?

Why would it not be? I've seen specs and reports that say it is indeed more powerful than the PS3/X360. I don't have them right now but I know I heard and saw them. The Wii U like all other consoles won't show it's true power right away anyway.

I'm actually expecting the Wii U to be fairly ahead of the PS360 in terms of power.

Of course they could make the Wii U much more powerful, but Nintendo has never tried to compete with the graphical capabilities, high-end GPU and CPU will only make the console too expensive and they won't stand a chance anyway when Nextbox and PS4 arrive. Why would they make it Uber-powerful? The Wii sold the most consoles this gen despite having the worst specs.

Also, source for underlined part?

I never implied the Wii U to be considerably more powerful than the PS4/720 or even on par with those consoles. I just don't see why you expect the Wii U to be on par with the PS360, which will be past gen consoles when the Wii U. The've only followed the route of using last gen hardware one time, and that was with the Wii. Nintendo has said themselves that they want to attract more 3rd party support and go after the hardcore, so I don't see why it's unreasonable to assume the Wii U to be at least more powerful than the PS360.

And I never implied that you said that. My point was that Nintendo knows that PS4 and Nextbox (I don't like 720, sounds awful) will be much better spec-wise, so they'll just go with good but still affordable hardware. The touchscreen alone will thrive the price up, adding a powerful hardware will make it unattractive for Nintendo's main market, the casuals. And they don't need to make it considerably stronger than PS3 or 360. 3rd party support will come, 3rd party developers just complained because the Wii had no HD support. Now that HD is pretty much established, Nintendo will have way less problems to find support from 3rd parties.

And for the record, of course I think it will more cabable than the current HD consoles, but I'm just thinking the difference won't be that much. Don't forget that the Wii U will need to calculate graphics for essentially two screens, maybe Nintendo will find a neat solution to reduce needed power for two-screen support, but that's all speculation for now.

Also, you didn't gave me the source I asked you for. And I want to know how you could possibly know the other underlined part.

I didn't say the first underlined part.

As for the second underlined part, I was referring to past generations where Nintendo used hardware comparable with it's competitors. (GC, N64, SNES, NES-well maybe not the nes). The Wii is the only time where they were drastically underpowered.

Well when you said "Of course they could make the Wii U much more powerful" and "Why would they make it Uber-powerful?" You seemed to imply that you were stating them as refutes to my points. It confused me as to why you mentioned uber-powerful if I never mentioned that as a possibility.

I just don't see it being only slightly improved from current gen consoles. I think Nintendo can make the Wii U considerably more powerful than the PS360 without expending too many resources. I'm not saying they NEED to be considerably more powerful than the PS360, I just think doing so will be easy enough to make the benefits greater than the costs. Now, I don't know if it will be competetive with the PS4 & the Nextbox, it's impossible to know right now. I just think it would be reasonable to assume a largely apparent gap between ccurrent gen consoles & the Wii U.

my bad on the source part.

See, especially the past generations show that you don't need a strong console to be competive. GC was more powerful, yet sold way less than the PS2. SNES was less powerful than the Mega Drive/Genesis, yet it sold more. I'm not sure about NES and Master System, but if I remember correcty, NES was less powerful, and still sold more. The only exception is the N64.

On your last part: Fair enough, but I'm thinking the sticking point is the touchscreen. The controller alone will be expensive enough. IMHO I don't see them adding a considerably stronger hardware to that. It would be just too expensive.

Nintendo's consoles has always been sold for reasonable prices:

NES: $99

SNES: $199

N64: $199

GC: $199

Wii: $249

Wii U: $349? I can't see here more thann 400. At max I'd say $399, but that's already a hefty pricetag.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

As much as possible which realistically is $450 as an absolute maximum. ($349 or $399 is far more likely though)

First, I want it to cost that much because that would likely indicate it has comparatively powerful hardware, and second, an expensive Wii U would also allow Sony to price PS4 high and thus again allow for very powerful hardware. I am very interested in having a graphically powerful next gen.

I normally would say I also hope that a pricey Wii U would allow MS to price the X720 high but I almost lost hope with MS as I believe due to the success of Kinect they already decided to aim for a cheap casual oriented console.

Around the Network

I'm thinking it'll be around the 349 price point...

The PS360 sells between 200-250 right now, and if rumours be true, the Wii U will "only" be 50 % more powerful, and if it were that powerful they could opt to sell it somewhere around 250-300 - BUT with the tablet it'll ofcourse cost more... Therefore 350.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Wow! This convo. got HUGE when I was at school! 0_o I agree with Jay520 the Wii U will be more powerful than the PS360. It will probably use something near to what last gen. has but updated. The Wii U already proves it can do PS360 graphics because of E3, and those aren't even fully developed games. After the Wii U comes out you will for sure see it's full power.

With the source thing. I said underneath that I don't remember the source so I couldn't give it to you. But, I promise that I saw that and it was from a respectable source, I just can't remember. And besides Nintendo said it was. They didn't specify the extent but they are making it clear that it is.

wiiU: $600

Are you aware aussi dollars are more expensive than US ones?

OT: $350 seems about right.
