It will depend on when the PSP2 is announced. Historically Nintendo won't move forward in the handheld market unless they have reason to.

| superchunk said: Let's take a look at Nintendo's handheld legacy. Gameboy 1989 GBPocket 1996 GBColor 1998 GBAdvance 2001 GBASP 2003 NDS 2004 GB Micro 2005 NDS Light 2006 Do you see a general pattern here? Nintendo will put out either a redesign or a completely newer upgraded better handheld every 2-3 years. Longest time without doing so was on the original gameboy. Since then they have realized the potential revenue from doing so. Expect another redesign of the DS in 2008. Since Micro never really took off and GBA has since nearly died, I also think that by 2010 we will see another major Nintendo handheld device. Similar to how the GBC was replaced by GBA, the DS that is redesigned this year will be replaced in 2010 by a completely different model. Estimated abilities: GB < NES GBC ~ NES GBA ~ SNES DS: SNES < DS > N64 (Funny, I remember reading a technical discussion on N64 in Nintendo Power, I think, when it was first released. They commented on how empty the case actually was and how simple it would be to make this into a hand held.) Next: N64 < X > GC Kinda interesting how Nintendo really waits to push their handhelds to do what their consoles did years prior. Yet Sony jumped in immediately and pushed the PSP to near PS2 levels. Shows how the handheld market really works and how Sony and other past Nintendo rivals have failed respectively in that market. |
Accurate, except for the fact that you missed the Gameboy Light... Japan exclusive!! Also...
GB < NES
GBC > NES
GBA > SNES
DS > N64
DS 2 > GC
No ~. Why no ~? Because first, if there were any ~, they would be -, and second, all are <, or >.
The DS is simply selling too well, Nintendo has no reason to release a successor any time soon. Especially since they haven't even started with the DS/Wii connectivity. 2010 will be the absolute earliest a new Nintendo handheld will be released, and that's if Sony releases a PSP2 in '09
Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!
It will be announced a year before the Wii2 will get announced... anytime after 2011

I was using wikipedia as my source which is why I had "~" as that was what it was intended to be similar too. Whether or not they were actually ">" or "<" is open to discussion. GBA is lacking in some computational ability and 2 buttons on the interface compared to the SNES. DS is also lacking in some 3D abilities and an analog stick compared to the N64. As an extension I would expect the next Nintendo handheld to be similar or "~" to the GC in all but minor ways, trully not ">" or "<" just as has been seen in previous models.
I purposely left off gameboy light and another gameboy mentioned as well as the seperation of GBA and GBA SP as they didn't have any computing differences to their sister models, only repacking like DS to DSLight.
Imo it won't be untill 2010-2011 at the earliest and a release 2011-2012. I can see the DS continuing to print money as long as the software keeps flowing for it. As for a redesign I personally don't see it happening but things can always change.

I think "Similar" to the Gamecube in processing power is ensured because I have been suspecting for awhile that Nintendo will take advantage of a 45nm (or 32nm) process to shrink the size of the Gekko/Broadway and Flipper/Holywood processors to a level where they can be integrated onto one chip and used in a portable device; considering the Wii is so energy efficient I don't think that this will be a large stretch. The advantage of using a similar architecture is that Nintendo would be able to combine their tool and technology development, and port games between the Wii, DS2 and Gamecube.

Plus, why would they? The DS lite has the potential to beat the PS2
if Nintendo made a new then sale would dropa nd nintendo wont be ps2 or for that matter Game boy
They'r e using marketing techniques to their ad.
It would be awesome if a new one came out though!

Somehow makes a lot of sense, even if is clocked below the 400 Mhz the similar arquitecture will please a lot the small and big devs...
Probably 2011, thats just my guess.
I have a feeling they are going to add shaking motion to it. Sorta like an etch and sketch motion. Play Galaxy for a few hours then go play New Super Mario Bros and you will feel like shaking the DS when you are about to fall trying to spin =P.
