Forums - Sales - Nintendo 64 Vs. Playstation Vs. Saturn

N64 had so many good games, it would be impossible not to love it. While the PS1 had many great games, there are so many classics in the N64 library that cause it to be even better, like first party games, especially Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64, and Rare's games, like Goldeneye and Banjo-Kazooie.
The Saturn is an interesting console. Had Sega made better decisions, it could have done far better.
There was an interesting article about the Saturn here:

This is pretty interesting, but its also a fairly lengthy read. It took me a while to finish. Plus, this has a somewhat pro-Sega stance. Still worth reading though.

Sorry, but the PS by miles. Some of the best games were brand new franchises.

Resident Evil, Gran Turisimo, Silent Hill to name just a few.

The best games for the N64 were just old franchises trotted out in 3D

Mario 64, Mario Kart and the Zeldas. Goldeneye is the only one I remember being new and REALLY highly rated.

Best original game on the N64 was Pikmin imho.

Except Mario 64, Zelda OoT, and so on literally re-invented entire genres for the 3D age. There weren't very many such innovations on the Playstation.

Nintendo did re-invent some genres, but the PSX invented genres....survival horror, racing simulator (I know there were some on PCs, but nothing like GT). Also it re-invented genres as well with games like Tomb Raider, GTA, Siphon Filter, FFVII, MGS, ect. I give them a Draw.

N64 by miles

I'm suprised that noone has said 3DO yet

N64 easily, although it remains IMO the poorest Nintendo home console for games (jury is still out on Wii of course). There are a smattering of great games for N64, but ultimately even games like Mario 64 and Zelda:OOT let me down compared to their predecessors. If you thought that was blasphemy, let me also add that I like Mario Kart 64 better than Super Mario Kart. Lesser-known N64 games like Goemon's Great Adventure, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, NBA Hangtime and Gauntlet Legends are really its strength for me.

Of course, the competition in the era of the N64 was extremely poor. Saturn has some great games but unfortunately too few of them since it died so soon. Still, give me Guardian Heroes, Shining Force III and the like over the Playstation's pathetic heap of junk any day. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a masterpiece and a few other games are definitely worth playing on your PS2, but I found most highly rated Playstation games to be extremely poor (Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Tekken, etc. among them).

I do agree with the guy who said this was the "dark age" of gaming. IMO it was the poorest generation to date.

Tetris Party Friend Code = 116129046416 (ditto)

Definately N64. It certainly didn't have the largest library, but the games were incredible. That Nintendo/Rare combo was unstopable. Goldeneye, PD, Mario 64, BK, DK64, Mario Kart, Zelda, and many more. Its a pity about the lack of memorable 3rd party titles however, which was obviously a factor in the eventual outcome. The THQ wrestling series was one notable exception - No Mercy etc, which in my opinion compare favorably to the more recent wrestling games.

PS had more than its fair share of hits too. GT in particular was very impressive for its time. Racing simulators and RPG's were almost nonexistant on the N64, so for fans of these genres the PS was the obvious choice. But overall, I say N64.

All of the systems were great. I love Saturn but it comes in third based on the fact that the multi platform games for PS/Sat were always better on PS.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

How so, that Nintendo was dethroned?

Playstation sold more than the NES, and sold more than the SNES and Genesis combined.

It had a wider variety of games: For every "awesome" N64 game, there were at least 3 good to great PS1 games.

Even with the multiplatform games, the N64 without a doubt had better graphics, but the audio was significantly better on the PS1, the controls for a majority of games felt better on a PS1 controller compared to that huge piece of plastic of an N64 controller, and for a minute few, while the PS1 allowed for cutscenes, the N64 had a little picture with subtitles underneath.

Add in the fact that the most expensive PS1 games cost $50 compared to $70+ for the most expensive N64 games.

The N64 was the only non-Sega console where I owned the fewest games for, and I have no regrets because there were more games available for the PS1.

I just think there was a huge drop off it gameplay from the 16 bit era.  I'd take either an SNES or Genisis for a PS1 honestly if i had to make the choice.

Maybe it's just the shell shock over it being sandwhiched between the SNES and PS2 eras but the 64 and Playstation were my least favorite systems.  I'd rather bust out my Atari 7800 then play an N64 game not pokemon or a majority of my PS1 games. (pretty much all of em that arn't SNES ports like Tactics Ogre.)

Goldeneye and Mariokart are exceptions to this, but only in multi-player modes.  I just can't stand that 64 controller.

Tekken and Resident Evil are two of the most overrated series of all time.

Same can be told about the Mario Brawlers ... their combos are way to easy , and I dont like the garphical style ... BUT THATS MY OPINION , and seeing that your the only person that complains about Tekken or RE , means that your post is just your opinion to ... so I dont care ...

EDIT : wow , I see you have both Wii RE games ... so why do you buy them for actually ?

I also think Tekken is overrated. Nothing in the arcades kept me playing it, and it seemed pretty easy no matter who it with.

Also, i did forget Ogre Battle 64. That is another game other them Poke Stadium i'd play... and really when i say play pokemon stadium i mean play my pokemon gameboy games on TV. Last time i tried to play Ogre Battle 64 though the controller ruined it for me.

I really hate that controller. They ever make a better 3rd party controller? Only 3rd party controller i had somehow foudn a way to be bigger!!

If Ogre Battle 64 came to virtual console it's probably the first VC game i'd buy.

PS1 was by far better, the games on that system were by far better then the N64, the 64 had about 2 good games a year, while the PS1 had about 20.
