Forums - Sales - Dance genre sales up 326% yoy, says NPD

VG247

NPD has been doing a bit of math, and according to its figures for the 12 months ending October 31, the dance genre has grown 326% percent year-over-year. When compared to overall videogame sales, the later has only grown yoy by 3%. Last month, NPD noted that the dance category was up 135% when comparing October 2010 figures to the same period in 2011. Two titles which can help confirm the growth in the genre are Just Dance and Dance Central: the former is up 85% yoy in sales and the later passed the 2.5 million sales mark in August of this year. According to NPD, 8 out of every 10 players of dance games are female, the majority of which are teenagers or younger.

Thanks, Joystiq.

Just Dance WOW.

Its not a surprise though, Dance games never seem to get old & from personal experience their word of mouth is great (its the only thing that has made my friends want a console, they still dont have them but a lot are at least talking about it, which is a polar shift in their thinking), though I wish there would be more support for (more) dance tracks on the singstore & something similar for the wii dance games so we could get more new tracks between sequels.

Plus I think the Wii used to be the go to place for dance games mainly. Now they are all over the place. I am aware the Dance Dance games used to be everwhere, but now all the big dance games are on all consoles. A broader audience.

But you have to say that the Wii takes the major chunk (JD and Zumba), and 360 has a good slice (DC and probably a bit of JD).
