That is a good idea, I tend to turn it off just after quitting a game. I've never thought of it that way. I'll be more careful from now on, hopefully no damage is done.

I don’t think a console should be designed so that you would have to think about what to do before you turn it off. People are used to just turn things off when they want to so you shouldn’t have to think about it from a design stand point

Yeah, that's the way it should be, but sadly that's not the case & people have to take the necessary precautions because of that.

i'm not sure waiting for it to cool and stuff really matters i had an old 60gb for 4 years and never did that and it was fine

but it doesn't sound good if its not turning off but do you mean it doesn't shut down or the fans won't turn off when shut down

Put it in vertical position, it heat a lot less. Maybe its too late but I wouldnt take any chance.
