Total revenue is far less important than actual profit. Total revenue will always favor the 360 due to the higher price tags on the console itsel, while the Wii is likely to have a much higher profit. While the 360 is doing absolutely fine in its own right, it is losing very badly compared to the Wii.

What you guys call a motion control is known as a gesture interface: http://www.bruceongames.com/2007/10/02/the-future-it-is-all-a-gesture/

Sony had one with Eyetoy on the Playstation 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeToy
Unfortunately because this was invented in Great Britain Sony did not put the resources they should have behind it. It would have been a world beater.

I believe that Nintendo saw the potential in Eyetoy that Sony had missed. Hence the gesture interface in the Wii.

FWIW Microsoft are very strongly tipped to bring out a gesture interface for the 360 this year. This could be optical, ultrasonic, accelerometers, or any of a range of other technologies that are available. The 360 will also see some very sharp price reductions this year. And Live is a lot better and a long way ahead of any comparable offering. And 360 out grossed Wii for total revenue in the USA in 2007.

Do not get Wii blind to the point of underestimating Microsoft.

Yes, a gesture interface.  I was just using the term Jimmay used.

How well do you think a gesture interface would do for the 360?  I can't see many third parties taking advantage of it as there's no guarentee that all users will have it, as is the usual problem with peripherals that are released later in a console's life unless it's packed in with the game that requires it.

Do you think 360 out grossing Wii for total revenue in the USA in 2007 had something to do with the large gap in install base at the begining of the year that still exists today though the gap is narrowing?  Or maybe it is due to the fact that the hardware and software has a higher price.

Agreed. Who cares how much money a company has as a revenue. Nobody cares except the bosses at microsoft who claim that their machine had money spent on it. Irrevelent. profit is what is important and right now who is making the profit. Sony thought that they would release the ps3 and people would come running. What was the quote" If anyone could find a ps3 that lasted on the shelf for more than 10 minutes I would pay you $10" cant remember who it was but im sure someone will let me know.

also which console has room to  reduce prices on its console. nintendo could price its console right now for$99 and not be losing as much money is on the ps3 at $400. ms has a little room to reduce its prices but it also is sitting on a knifes edge with profitability. But i think it needs to to help it to sell especially in europe were the ps3 is eating into its lead.

I want wii fit and I want it now

To Microsoft profit is pretty much irrelevant. They have made mountains of it for decades from PC software and have enough money in the bank to buy a country or two. Microsoft want marketshare and that means that turnover is mighty important to them, which is why being a billion dollars ahead of Wii for the year by the end of November is significant. Now they want to ramp up the 360 installed base so they will drop prices and bundle. A 360 with Halo 3 for $199 (for instance) is going to attract a huge number of buyers. And Microsoft can easily do this. Wii will probably outsell 360 in units in North America this year, but not by as much as the fanboys think. Also PS3 is going to have a brilliant year and could beat both of them. We will see, it is very interesting.

There is no company that believes profit is pretty much irrelevant. Microsoft is "investing" in the XBox 360 under the belief that they can recover the losses later on; when you look at their downloadable content and online gameplay that you pay for (even though similar services have been free on the PC for over a decade), as well as their growing video download service it becomes clear how Microsoft intends to turn a profit overall.

Many tens of millions of PS2 owners are waiting to upgrade.
GTA IV, MGS4, GT5, Wipeout HD, Littlebigplanet, Killzone 2 etc give them some excellent reasons to make that upgrade.
In this generation lots and lots of people will own 2 consoles (as mentioned in my blog). They will have a Wii as a toy for some family fun. And they will have a "proper" gaming console, just as they have had before. A lot of people have been holding back on the proper gaming console to see what happens. Enough is happening in 2008 to make them make up their minds and go out and buy.

Bruce system loyalty is a myth in this market, if it was for real everyone would be into atari or Nintendo or Sega.  People aren't hanging around waiting for PS3, most bought PS3 for games that are on the Wii now, those games you are talking about sold to a very select market, the higherst of those games sell no more than 15 million, PS2 had over 100 million consoles, that's less than 15% attach rate.  Sorry but you need a better argument for why people will switch over to PS3 over Wii.

So PSX owners didn't buy PS2s? Meanwhile do you have the faintest idea just how silly this statement is: "Lifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015" The current Wii model will be ancient, forgotten history by 2015. The PS3 will still be on sale.

The lifetime of a console depend on its business success , not on its technical power ( Atari 2600, Nes, SNes, Ps1,PS2 ).
