Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Six reasons the Xbox is the best system of all time

saying that the xbox is the best console is an insult to the SNES and the PS1.

It's definitely one of the biggest inspirations for this gen (PS3 & X360) which are essentially it's predecessors with better graphics and are more powerful, with extra features tacked on.

Wii stands on it's own.

In terms of the best? No I don't think, but I think it has probably changed the industry the most, if it had a considerably better library behind it (Akin to PS2) then maybe, although I enjoyed what it had, I think many still found it lacksture.

Practically top console for me as I've only gamed PC, Genesis, Dreamcast and PS1 beforehand.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Ok, the best console ever would not be released with a huge hardware defect as RROD which forced MS to offer owners 3 years warrnaty plans and costed MS billions of dollers.

End of topic, lets move on folks.

So basically it brought PC gaming to consoles. Hence, the PS3 is following the path as well. Both HD consoles this gen are basically PCs under the TV.

For me, the original Xbox opened Pandora's box for gaming. I personally liked the days of Japanese dominance on console, no patches, no DLC. I always thought Western gaming was better suited for the PC.

Agreed.

I miss the old styles of gaming.

Like I already said to someone else...Xbox, not Xbox 360.

Extended warranties are a bad thing? News to me.

RROD hasn't been an issue for years just like PS3's intial $600 price tag hasn't been issue. MS also fixing the problem made it an a non-issue for most of us. Its all history, try and come up with something relevant.

Trust me, the money MS lost on RROD is nothing compared to what Sony has lost on PS3.

OT: Xbox was indeed innovative. Even more so than PS2 and Gamecube in my opinion. But calling it the best console ever just isn't accurate.

mm no. Shooters on N64 were just as good as Halo given relative differences in technology. In fact, I'd say Goldeneye was better. Additionally PS1 had multiple dual analog stick shooters.

Goldeneye is no where near at par with Halo. They re-released Halo with just a visual update and it still feels almost at par with modern shooters. You can't do that with Goldeneye, its a broken piece of crap in comparison. Albeit fun in its own way.

The article does downplay the N64's impact on shooters. It raised the bar on shooters and how multiplayer was done in huge way. Which is why it destroyed the competition in that genre.

You know, making FPS relevant on consoles is cool and all, but man.... FPS fucking sucks these days after major devs went to consoles, massive dumb downs, auto-aim, and fucking cliche as hell. I really miss the days of super fast FPS tension action where skill is required instead of luck (look the guy can't see me atm, 3 bullets or 1 hit knife kill dead!). At least there is Tribes Ascend I guess.

Everything you said... it just oozes ignorance towards the genre.

Not sure what dumbed down means. Care to explain?

Auto aim and cliches weren't unheard of prior to this gen. Remember the N64?

Saying shooters today don't require skill is stupid. I don't even have to explain why if you spend two seconds actually thinking about it.

If you don't like games where people die quickly, I suggest you avoid military shooters. Simple as that.

I'm playing BF3 on PC, and it's the same shit, I can kill people with 3 or less bullets without them ever being able to do anything, modern FPS that has console counter parts in MP is generally not about skill but on who's not looking at you with 1s deaths, to that point, at least Halo is still somewhat respectable on that front as to most other console shooters. Dumbed down as in the general speed is super slow and the whole competition aspect is shot to shit due to the way they generally work these days. There is a reason why Halo is the only respectable competition FPS on console with the way they balanced the game, unless somebody gets a sniper rifle anyways. The only N64 shooter I played was Golden Eye, it always came down to the sniper rifle, mines, and oddjob, it was a fun party game, but it was never at the level of Quake back in the days.

I say this again like I have in other threads, try to sign up for Tribes Ascend beta, play that shit, see how well you can do on that game now that you are so pro console FPS, that will be your scale on skill based shooter. Not to mention the maps are much bigger. I have no issue with consoles when it comes to other genres, it just won't be my 1st choice when it comes to FPS or FPS game design for as long as there is PC gaming.

I have no problem with playing military shooters since my friends play them, I'm also usually on the winning team, shit's just not that challenging and I tend to fade out much faster due to boredom after 1-3 months.
