Forums - Gaming - Final Fantasy 13-2 PS3/360 performance gap "a lot smaller"

Eurogamer

The performance gap between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of forthcoming Square Enix RPG Final Fantasy 13-2 should be significantly smaller than it was with its predecessor, according to the game's producer.

Yoshinori Kitase told Eurogamer that the development team has worked to make the two games as similar as possible.

"Technically speaking there must be some kind of difference there I'd imagine," he explained. "But when it comes to how the game looks they should be the same.

"With 13 we were aware there was a difference. Anyone can notice it. Obviously there is Blu-ray media on PS3 so particularly in movie scenes, because of the compression rate differences, you could see a slight difference between the two version.

"With 13-2 we've been trying to make the most of the movie scenes with real-time rendering so that the gap between the two is a lot smaller."

Kitase added that both versions will also feature identical game content.

"If we include any specific original features in one of the platforms obviously that wouldn't be fair to the users of the other console. You should be able to enjoy the game exactly to the same extent."

The gaping performance gap between the two console SKUs of Final Fantasy 13 was widely documented on release, with the Xbox 360 version falling well short of the PlayStation 3 version.

nice to know this development team aim for equality. instead of some companies we know like to take bribes.

Well that's good to know.

I wonder how pre-rendered scenes will be handled too, if the Xbox 360 version is only going to be one disc I guess we are still going to see the horrendous compression in the CGI cutscenes, or just a huge lack of them.

Was that confirmed. I really think the 360 version will still be multiple discs. 360 owners have gotten used to that lately =P so its not a big deal.

Wow. Some of you guys really can't seem to read. xD

Confirmed: Less emphasis on CGI cut-scenes. They'll use real-time for most of them. Heck, it's written up here in the OP. X_x

Confirmed #2: The 360 version of the game will come on a single disc.

yes it was already confirmed to be on 1 disc a while back

i thought square said that cgi cutscene's will basically be absent in this game(the main reason why the 360 version will be able to fit on 1 disc)

i remember complaining about it when square said it

they seem to be downgrading Final Fantasy every chance they get with each new installment

but then again FF13-2 is not really it's own story

It doesn't say less emphasis on CGI cut-scenes.

No?

Well, I'll quote, from the OP: "With 13-2 we've been trying to make the most of the movie scenes with real-time rendering so that the gap between the two is a lot smaller."

Like I said, it says nothing about CGI cutscenes, you seem to have misunderstood.

There are three "types" of cutscenes. You have real-time cutscenes, pre-rendered cutscenes that use assets from the game (or slightly more detailed ones) and lastly you have CGI cutscenes.

There are 6 hours worth of video files in Final Fantasy XIII, CGI only makes up an hour of it.

They are talking about making pre-rendered scenes that use up disc space like this...

...run in real-time.
