Oh come on man, you constantly bash atheism in a totally unjust way. Name one time I've bashed religion unjustifiably?
"A testament to your taking only the things you want to hear and ignoring the rest". When do I do that?
Funny, your the one who totally disregarded the statistical information I presented to you as "an illusion" and that's coming from a guy who gets some of his scientific knowledge from "creation.com".

Generalizing was one of your mistakes, you were just flat-out wrong about things, and it got to the point where it was just insulting. Don't get me wrong, I know I'm obviously not right about everything and ofcourse, I make mistakes but did you read some of the posts you made on here? A lot of what you said was just ridiculous.

I do respect you for having the minority viewpoint on this site and openly expressing it, I don't think I'd be able to do the same. But then you go and say something like "and let my flesh be torn out so you can finally hear words that have a taste of meaning?" What the hell does that even mean? You think your viewpoint is the only meaningful one on here? Get over yourself man, most people disagree with you on here for a reason.

What point are you making exactly? In earlier posts it seemed to be societies without religion are immoral or even chaotic (that's what I gathered, let me know if that's wrong), which is totally untrue, and when I showed you how ridiculous that was with actual data (Countries with the most non-religious being the most peaceful, having the lowest crime rates, higher quality of life etc.), you passed it off as "an illusion".

I didn't bash atheism. I bashed Runa, that's all. In my post against secularism, I didn't bash athiests, nor did I even bash atheism. I simply stated (and yes I did reread myself) that on a larger scale, an attitude of "rebellion" (obviously in my eyes against God) is one that will lead to the breakdown of social structure as a whole. I also gave common modern day examples to support my claim. For the full post, see here -> http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4295727

Of course this is a generalization, and no it doesn't apply to all atheists, it barely applies to atheism. It rather mostly applies to secularism, which is what I actually said in my post, before my words were twisted. The examples I provided were the core of the post, not the generalization.

Many secularists today have a wonderful outlook on life, and if you do then good for you. If I made the mistake to lump you in a category that doesn't resemble that, my apologies, but you have yet to supply the quote (I haven't read it yet). And don't use the mirror posts I gave to Runa, they were purely for demonstration and barely a reflection of my actual beliefs. I was returning fire for fire, you should understand that by now.

As for this: "I believe he is real, and the proof that he is lies in the fact that when I deny his existence, those very values disappear before my very eyes." Take this as a personal statement, I don't apply it to all non-believers. Yes I'm aware many areligious folks have a fantastic sense of morality. Granted and you can quote me on it.

@bolded I gave you the examples of Nazi germany, I gave you Soviet Russia. People will tell you they are based on Catholicism but that is pure bullocks. If you don't believe me, just read up on your history. It may have vestiges of it, but the core of the issue had to do with racial discrimination (general, extra-religious), the idea of Eugenics (for Germany), and control/power for Soviet Russia. Great contrast to Sweden et al. Again, do your best to look at all the facts and try not to nitpic!

@taste of meaning. I mean stop beating around the bush, stop sugar-coating, saying things as they are with no fluff, no embelishment. Sparing us all the annoyance and heart-ache some of these threads can cause and getting right to the core. That's what I mean.

@My point exactly. The point I'm trying to make is that if you take God out of the equation, what are you left with really? A relative moral code, relative to each person. So long as this works I'm okay with it, but you need to see farther than that. There are people living their ordinary lives, and then there are people leading evil lives (God or no God). That evil, if you take God out of the equation, how do you recognize it if you deny its existence? Will you call it a mental disorder? You will treat it with pills and treatment, but will never get to the bottom of the issue. That's where religion comes in handy. Because evil is real, and it is spiritual, the day you will be faced with it, you won't know what to do. The other tragedy is that you may be living a lie, just as religious people may be living a lie. Until all is proven certain that there just is no God, 0 doubt, completely and convincingly observable, an openness on the matter is needed. Again, I repeat, the existence of evil is what can perplex a society that has no notion of God or of the supernatural.

Yes there are negatives points in religion I will not deny it. Yes there are negative points in secularism and in atheism. I think we all need to take the time to look at ourselves in the mirror and look at those issues, and be humble about them. Without that we all fail this thread.

You phrased it a lot harsher earlier on :/ But ok. Look, this isn't an opinion. You are wrong. There isn't an attitude of "rebellion" agaisnt god, no one is rebelling, people are just thinking maybe they don't exist or that it doesn't seem likely. And secular societies don't lead to social structure breaking down, I can show you many examples of the most succesful nations in the world that have a very small amount of religious people. You can't blame or link the crimes of communism with atheism or secularism, you can't. It's not the fault of atheism or secularism, it's the fault of an oppressive government that wants to be seen as god.

If you take God out of the equation, you are left with all previous morals as they were here BEFORE religion and you are left with people having less reason to hate eachother and blow each other up. What else would we lose? People having a sense of community when they go to church/mosque etc. People who are afraid of death being conforted by the idea of an afterlife and more, I know we also lose the good parts about a belief in God, but they are replaceable.

People don't get their morals from religion (apart from fundies), they pick and choose what fits with their own moral code, this is a good thing, otherwise many christians would support slavery and kill their neighbor if he works on a sunday. If we didn't take the good from the bible and reject the bad, christian nations would look a lot like the middle east. And if we didn't have the bible at all, we would lose a lot of the sense of culture that secular nations have. (I still celebrate easter and christmas, I guess christmas isn't fully christian though).

I can understand what I view as evil based on my own moral code that comes from mostly my own empathy and understanding of others , not from a religious book and fear of god. So does everyone else. Nobody looks at the crimes of Stalin and Hitler and thinks "the bible/god said this is evil, so it is". They think it is wrong without a thought of god, they know it is evil based on their own moral code. So yes, we can understand what evil is, and I don't think it's spiritual, if you think it is, fine, but please don't state that as fact.

About living a lie, well to me it seems that I'm living with the best knowledge about our world that we have (science), and the best moral code that we have (based on empathy and understanding) and I'm not closed on the matter of god, I don't know why you think that, I think it's possible ofcourse, I highly doubt it's a god of any religion, but creator if it did exist. The existence of evil doesn't perplex me. I think it comes from deep rooted issues within a person, if it doesn't, then it could be that the person hasn't developed empathy, which is the basis of our morality (imo). It can be recognized as a mental illness, It should be treated with pills if it can, and that person should be judged in this life, by us, not by the possibility of a god that will send him to hell. How do we judge him? Based on the empathy we feel for the victim (among other factors ofcourse).

EDIT: Just read this.

Secularism claims to have brought the emancipation of women. What has feminism brought to our society? Grief mostly! Men can't handle their partners, and many marriages crumble because women don't understand their place.

Yeah, I keep my bitch in the kitchen where she belongs. But seriously, that's totally NOT TRUE! (again). Equal relationships tend to work BETTER and last longer. It may bring grief to YOU, but not to anyone I've ever met. People love the fact that women are equal to men, as they should be in this society. We are passed the hunter-gatherer days of what? 20,000 years ago?

The Iraq War actually has little, if anything at all, to do with religion. Remove religion from the equation and the US would still have invaded Iraq. The big issue was WMDs and the nature of Hussein's regime. It was not a religious war but a defensive one, at least in justification.

Also, removing religion from the picture is hardly a reasonable position. The same could be said of many other things- we could just as well eliminate free will, human nature, national boundaries, sovereignty and achieve the same goal. If you could remove religion and eliminate war, this hardly means that religion causes war. It just means that religion is necessary for war. This is hardly true (Iraq example), but my point is that religion is no more a cause of war than the other things I mentioned.

It had nothing to do with religion, mostly true. But the underlined is so wrong.

I don't like Saddam Hussein...but the situation in Iraq is a whole lot worse ever since the war.

Ask most of the succeeding civilizations that preceeded us what they think about it.

Their place?... I think maybe you should understand your place you [censored myself because it's inappropriate for this thread]. It's people like you that make the world suck.

What do you understand by their place sapphi? Don't make me upset at you. If you're willing to insult me, you better be willing to give me some kind of explanation.

@bold. You should be ashamed of yourself for saying that. Atheist or not. Unless you have absolutely no moral sense, in which case...

Have a taste of religion, see if it might be relevant for this, archaic as it may be to some:

James 3 (Writen roughly 45 AD)

1Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.

3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

Proverbs 18 (written roughly 1000 BC)

21The tongue has the power of life and death,

and those who love it will eat its fruit.

What do YOU understand by 'their place'? You're the one who used it. You're the one who thinks women have/should have a 'place' they should stick to. I know what you meant, and I think you're just as sexist as that book you keep quoting.

"I don't understand how someone could like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but not like Twilight!!!"

"Last book I read was Brokeback Mountain, I just don't have the patience for them unless it's softcore porn."

(The Voice of a Generation and Seece)

"If you cant stand the sound of your own voice than dont become a singer !!!!!"

                                                                               (pizzahut451)

I think we should start a thread with "Reasons why Padib needs to be ignored/banned from religious threads."

WE can start with "He's a sexist pig." Seriously dude? Women need to be in their place? at this point I honestly can't tell if you actually mean that or if you're being facetious. I've noticed a few other 'ideals' being spewed forth from your fingertips are so archaic and barbaric I'm honestly astounded you don't think that a computer is evil.

Your opinions on women, gays, atheism, science, and evolution are just...insulting to all involved. You'd be doing us all (including yourself) a favor by staying out of these threads because you are not contributing anything of value except an example of how NOT to act. your lengthy diatribe posts are filled with hate and ignorance and we'd all be better off without them.

So bash me all you want, given your inverted, backwards view on this world, an insult from you is like a compliment to me. Double negative!

Case in point. Bravo at proving all my above points. The law of the strongest trumps the voice of truth.

Bravo at demonstrating religious intolerance.

And a big bravo at proving your lack of ability to take my arguments at face value, quoting them and giving them a proper response. A testament to your bigotry and failure to reason. *clap clap clap clap clap

Oh I know how to retort, but I long since realized no amount of reason, logic, and rationale would do anything to pierce your clouded, twisted worldview. Again, your constant need to quote the bible as fact, push barbaric ideals, and completely twist people's words to justify your ignorance is just....painful to watch.  Openminded you are not.

@bolded. There are so many things I can say about you. But for one I will say, you can neither write, nor can you READ.

"I long since realized no amount of reason, logic, and rationale would do anything to pierce your clouded, twisted worldview."

To disprove this base claim with the swipe of a hand...

(And to help your reading disability, I put them in bold italicised underlined.)

I can read just fine, I simply chose not to read 99% of what you write because I feel it'll suck the IQ points out of me.  Every time I try to read your posts I'm bombarded with one logical fallacy after another.  When I interact with you, it's like my brain is blowing a fuse trying to make sense of the mishmash of flawed logic that you try to twist into something rational.

Let me ask you this:

Are video games still relevant in modern society?

I think you will find that the percentage of people that say religion is very important to them is much greater than the percentage of people saying the same of videogames. Just a few days ago a poll showed that 2/3 of the people voting for the president of the USA consider it very important that the candidate is strongly religious. How many people do you think feels it's very important that the most powerful man in the world has a keen interest in videogaming?

That should give a little hint to the relevance of religion.

padib said:

If you are not reading 99% of what I say, then how can you be in a position to judge? Really Runa, you need to take a look at that.

I understand you have a hard time reading what I say because it's completely the pole oposite of your POV. But if I'm reading everything everyone on here is saying, and some opinions pole opposite of mine, and re-reading it, but you barely read 1% of my text, how in the world can you legitimately call me closed-minded?

Listen, there is one basic rule in forums okay. People who take the time to read, meditate their posts and write articulately should be given a measure of weight and credit. I've been a member on here for more than 2 years, have provided my fair share of rational opinions and have proven my worth in general on VGChartz. When you make posts trying to exclude me from the debate, it doesn't coincide in any way with the reputation I've tried to build here, as a religious member or not.

I hope you understand that...

I'm not reading 99% of your stuff not because I don't want to, but because I can't. I often skim through like every other post of yours and even then I'm bombarded with logical fallacies that I can't seem to avoid.  I don't read 99% of your stuff because 1% of your posts are still 100% of my daily dose of frustration.

You need to understand I don't have a hard time discussing with you because you disagree with me.  I have dozens of friends who disagree with me.  I'm friends with religious people, right wing people, pro life people, and plenty of others who are more than capable of providing an alternate viewpoint without being irrational or using twisted logic.  Some of my best friends are people who disagree and argue with me just for the sake of providing a polar opposite view...and I respect them because they're capable of doing so by using logic.  I heard a better anti-gay-marriage argument from a pro-gay-marriage person than I ever did from a homophobe.  what I'm trying to say is that despite all your attempts to assert yourself as a logical, rational person, I'm saying you're deluded.  Sadly such a phenomenon is not uncommon, I deal with a LOT of people who are incapable of following logic and instead are only interested in pushing their agenda.

I hope you understand that.

Is religion still relevant in modern society?

To many, yes. To others, no.

Amazing how such a simple answer can be completely missed by some who try very hard to sound intelligent.

It is losing its relevance but I dislike how people think Religion is the reason for many of the world's problems and that by everyone being an atheist we will all become rational logic indviduals .

Here is news for you, many who do not believe in a religion, are not atheists, they simply believe and care about nothing at all!!!

Thats even worse!

Major problem in today's society is many people believing in nothing at all.
