Asking once may be a nice gesture and make the elderly woman feel young again.

But actually enforced here is when it gets ridiculous.

I don't know anything about the facts of this story. But it is very possible that the store has a computerized ID scanner that logs each purchase of alcohol. If so the store may have a policy that requires everyone to log their ID regardless of age.

Like I said, I don't know the facts, but if this is the case people are probably overreacting. Besides, who cares really? It's not like life or happiness requires access to booze.
