What people forget with Sony is the flow on and synergy they got with the playstation in regards to other divisions , like helping bring dvd and bluray to market and underpinning the cost of R&D for the cell ,even though that was envisioned to be a cpu for use in a wide range of electronic appliances and white goods , so really it has done more than it's share of the heavy lifting ,one reason it is seen as the easiest way to introduce this tech to the public from a Sony point of view and that benefits the companies strategy , unfortunately it stops the Playstation brand from making the amount of profit it should .

PS2 had nothing to do with DVD coming to market.  DVD players were available for under $200 when PS2 launched.  DVD players launched nearly 3 years before PS2 launched.  Now BluRay is of course a big part of the PS3 story, but will never be as big as DVD and wont have as long a mainstream life.

Yes my mistake i should have uncoupled dvd from bluray in the bringing to market sense , rather dvd was put into the PS2 to add capacity and allow it to be a cheap dvd player , i remember it getting reviewed as a standalone player a lot when launched and quite favourably from a price point so even though it was not bringing it to market first up , it was used to help grow the market so my point about Sony looking at the PS from a how to maximise it's value to help enhance the other divisions stands and even though bluray success wasn't the point of the discussion , I think it will end up being a big fish in a  very small pond.

I think this tread should be kept updated.

Are the FY2012 available? It would be interesting to see how they all finished that year. It was Nintendos 1st in the red right?

Yeah, first year they were in the red. I'd imagine it won't happen again for this year, though.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

This clearly shows the actual business model regarding gaming is not feasible to microsoft and sony.

But has people are saying, both companies have much more into it, gaming is a set up to provide ulterior purposes.

Are they having a good business overall ?

I don't know.

It's interesting to see sony's huge losses right before a console launch, shame they didn't make loads of profit with the PS3, but it's nice to see that they turned there gaming business back to profit in 2010.
Microsoft got hit pretty hard with the original xbox but seem to have turned it around.

Good on nintendo for maintaining profitability on a yearly basis.

where is sony's 2011 results?

UPDATE PLSS

Yay!!!

This confuses me though, both the N64 and Gamecube were fairly cutting edge tech, and more powerfull then Sony's systems. How come they saw no losses, their software sales couldn't of been as high as the ps1/ps2. The gamecube was also sold for $100s cheaper then the ps2 and saw a price drop to $99 just 2 years after its launch.

This is all very confusing lol

I agree, this chart is very confusing. Nintendo doesn't seem to take a lost anywhere. Didn't they have research and development costs.

According to wiki gamecube sold -21.74 million units and gba sold -81.51 million. The ps2 is at -154.4 million. Sony was never able to make more then Nintendo during the ps2 big years? Also would't Nintendo have taken a hit from the virtual boy.

Also you have to factor in that during the PS2 year Sony was sinking a lot of money into marketing, which Nintendo wasn't doing at the time. The Gamecube was profitable right out of the gate. The Game Informer that covered the Gamecube launch stated that Nintendo was making about $20-to-$50 per console sold, and next to DVD's the Gamecube Disc we dirt cheap. In addition the GBA helped raise profits. Nintendo at the time was a thrifty spender helped them not post loses.
