Forums - Sony - What does Sony need to do to win next gen on consoles?

You are right Backwards compatibility is important I just see a lot technical hurdles to overcome. And I am curios to see if and how Sony is going to solve the problems.

What technical hurdles?

The next PS3 will likely either have a Cell Processor and/or a Cell Processor derivative with 1st gen sub routines....much like Toshiba's CERVO.  It's not like Cell Tech just stopped.

I also saw you say something about Nvidia's RSX.  But Nvidia isn't needed next gen for the next PS4 to be backwards compatible.  And lastly, XDR has greatly improved ram too.....I not only expect the PS4 to have similar to PS3 architecture, but I expect it to be backwards compatible with the PS3.

Why?

Because of the PSN.

Sony has, unlike with the PS2, a full operational network it must norture.  It must not only appease developer/publishers who have their movies, TV shows, music, games, and other services and apps....but it must appease its customers who are invested in those products as well.  You see, it isn't just the consumers and vendors who are invested in PSN.....But Sony as well...and by a few Billion.

That is why the PS4 will likely be backwards compatible and will need a CELL PROCESSOR OR Cell Like architecture built in.

There's the PSN that they will need to have on the next console, plus the compatibility with the Vita, too. They're coming out with a new handheld and they are going to want to have this handheld compatible with the PS4. Granted, it might not have all of the same functions as with the PS3, but it will be compatible with it.

Maybe lets see what happens. I lean towards no Cell no XDR.

Just saw your PSN comments. PSN is no pro cell argument. PSN can run on a PC if Sony wants to and they definetly intend to spread it over a lot platforms. I am not saying no backwards compatibility. I say no Cell (based) CPU/XDR. Maybe I am wrong but I cant see enough good reasons for Sony to Spend the money for XDR2 (which costs more then DDR3) and Cell development when there are cheaper and better solutions. Maybe Sony will try to go the Software emulation road and put serious ressources behind it. Everything is just speculation ofcourse.

A Cell Processor would be needed to play most of the PS3's PSN games.

There are games coming out now and will be coming out for years to come that are based around the Cell Processor, games that will require continued Sony support....such as the upcoming DUST 514.

Sony's not just going to drop these games and lose developer/publisher confidence and support, as well as their consumer's as well.  Like I said, Sony is as invested and committed to the PSN as their consumers and vendors....even more so at this point.

One way or another there will have to be either a current Cell Processor on board the PS4, one that exists in parallel to some other architecture, or there will be a "new and improved" Cell or Cell like architecture.

Could go either way on that, but just keep in mind, Sony still has those Cell Manufacturer plants.

All they have to do is: Make the PS4 as awesome as the Vita.

-Have tons of good/great exclusive games, tons of good/great multi-platform games, super fast load times, extra RAM, all games always running at full resolution & 60 FPS, a capacitive multi-touch panel on the back side of the dual shock 4, low price point, streamline game development as much as possible, etc.

By 2015, that should be easy enough to do.

Did they bought them back from Toshiba ? Besides the plants could be there to make PS3 production cheaper and surely can produce other stuff if Sony wants , like a Power 7 PS4 CPU.

Changing CPU doesnt mean Sony cant make the PSN library compatible to PS4. Power 7 is based on Power PC Architecture like the Cell/360 CPU.

Ok you listed the pros for Cell me the cons , all thats left is wait and see.

I do remember reading something about them buying back the plants, which they did in December of 2010.

The real question is does Sony need to win next gen?

as far as i'm concerned all Sony needs to do is continue to provide unrivaled content and innovatively, stunning graphically, genre/industry defining games and they should have the 8th gen on lock.

also resurrect every ip they own and publish them.

Every company wants to be the leader in market share, so yeah they will want to be on top.

and in theory they need to be. the leader has the most sells and makes the most money. also not always the case.
