Maybe lets see what happens. I lean towards no Cell no XDR. Just saw your PSN comments. PSN is no pro cell argument. PSN can run on a PC if Sony wants to and they definetly intend to spread it over a lot platforms. I am not saying no backwards compatibility. I say no Cell (based) CPU/XDR. Maybe I am wrong but I cant see enough good reasons for Sony to Spend the money for XDR2 (which costs more then DDR3) and Cell development when there are cheaper and better solutions. Maybe Sony will try to go the Software emulation road and put serious ressources behind it. Everything is just speculation ofcourse. |
A Cell Processor would be needed to play most of the PS3's PSN games.
There are games coming out now and will be coming out for years to come that are based around the Cell Processor, games that will require continued Sony support....such as the upcoming DUST 514.
Sony's not just going to drop these games and lose developer/publisher confidence and support, as well as their consumer's as well. Like I said, Sony is as invested and committed to the PSN as their consumers and vendors....even more so at this point.
One way or another there will have to be either a current Cell Processor on board the PS4, one that exists in parallel to some other architecture, or there will be a "new and improved" Cell or Cell like architecture.
Could go either way on that, but just keep in mind, Sony still has those Cell Manufacturer plants.
