Forums - Nintendo - Braid creator has heard Wii U "has a lot more RAM"

lack of RAM was really a limiting factor this gen especially for the PS3, I could never understand why they always skimp on console RAM. Devs always complain about the lack of RAM on consoles.

Both Crytech, Carmack and CCP have stated that they want 4GB+ total RAM next gen, well Crytech actually said they wanted 8GB+ but I doubt they will get that I think 4-6GB. Rumors suggest that the Wii U has 1.5GB

Crytek DOES suck at utilizing system resources properly. That's probably the biggest reason they want 8GB - they want to be as lazy and resource-hogging as possible.

4GB seems like a pretty big jump from the current gen. For the PS3 and X360 successors, I'm expecting something in the vicinity of 1GB system RAM + 1GB dedicated video RAM. I also expect they'd go with more efficient RAM before they go with a larger amount.

In Wii U, I can't estimate as much. It's pretty much a toss-up. Current Wii has only 88MB RAM total. Basing estimates off of that, current market prices, and statements from the industry so far ("has a lot more RAM", and about its architecture being more port-friendly and similar to popular architectures right now), I'd have to guess the Wii U has double the RAM of the PS3 or 360 (both have 512MB, though utilized very differently). Wii U probably sits around 1GB, and it's probably going to be split like a PC - some for video, some for system. I can't make any estimations as to precisely how they'd do that, though. I'd go with DDR4 or an equivilent for system, and GDDR4 or 5 for video.

I'd say they're going to want to close the gap more than that. 2 GB Minimum for Wii U, 4 for what Sony and Microsoft through out, though i agree that 8 sounds like a bit much

won't be GDDR 4 that is for sure, expensive and not that much better than 3.

Not having to pear back on assets and optomise the hell out of you memory system to get games running is not a good thing for anyone. The age where a console manufacturer can afford to make a system that is hard to develop for is at an end, and console OSs get more complex every year, Sony doesn't want another cross game chat feasco. The PSV shows current trends with it's 512+256MB RAM, The Wii U should double that IMO.

I have heard rumors are suggesting a combo of 1T-SRAM and DDR3 for the Wii.  They also state that it will have 1 GB of RAM dedicated to system with a seperate 512MB for video.  If any of these are correct is anyone's guess.  I'm going with 1GB 1T-SRAM myself with probably 512MB of GDDR4 for video for my guess until someone dissects the system.

What was the PS2/XB -->PS3/360 leap. Surely, given the longer time between launches, this gen will be a bigger leap.

has he also heard it's releasing 6 years later..

Because rumors persist that the Wii U "isn't all that much more"

those are just fanboy hate. kinda' reminds me of how the 3DS is somewhat being regarded as inferior to the PSP when all evidence point to otherwise.  I kinda' wish Nintendo, started releasing system specs again...though that won't stop the typical anti-Nintendo fanboy.

people suggest that? Are those people aware of the Vita, you know the successor to the psp to which the 3ds is VASTLY inferior??? would make for a much better argument don'tchathink

LOL...one would think so but there are just some blinded so much by Nintendo hate that they want to bog the sytem down even further.  It would make a boring argument to say the Vita is VASTLY superior to the 3DS in terms of hardware specs because it IS FACT!!!( the 3DS falls somewhere between the Wii and X360 in terms of hardware capability) NIntendo fans, usually do not argue with Sony fans when there is credible argument.  I cannot say the same for some Sony fans here in this site and others.  The SDF club takes advantage of Nintendo's new policy of not releasing console specs to crap on Nintendo systems.  One can see just by RAM alone (3DS 128MB FCRAM vs PSP 32MB-64MB ?RAM) that the 3DS is VASTLY superior.  The ARM11 CPU (IGN is bullshit saying it was dual CPU as the teardown already disproved their specs claims) could run anywhere between 400mhz-1Ghz on tablets and smartphones.  The gem of the 3DS over "ANY" PSP version is the PICA200 (running at 400mhz on the 3DS) which smashes the PSP in more ways than one.  My two cents.
