Puzzling results from Cern, home of the LHC, have confounded physicists - because it appears subatomic particles have exceeded the speed of light.

Neutrinos sent through the ground from Cern toward the Gran Sasso laboratory 732km away seemed to show up a tiny fraction of a second early.

The result - which threatens to upend a century of physics - will be put online for scrutiny by other scientists.

In the meantime, the group says it is being very cautious about its claims.

"We tried to find all possible explanations for this," said report author Antonio Ereditato of the Opera collaboration.

"We wanted to find a mistake - trivial mistakes, more complicated mistakes, or nasty effects - and we didn't," he told BBC News.

"When you don't find anything, then you say 'Well, now I'm forced to go out and ask the community to scrutinise this.'"

If true then modern physics is well screwed. Some laws will have to be written off.

I remember seeing somewhere that the speed of a beam of laser could exceed the speed of light because those beam don't contain particle that can transport information like electrons, I don't know about neutrinos it's probably wrong calibration

i knew that since "Prince of Darkness" these particles travel back in time and play movies in our heads.

Don't these people watch movies?

their on the right track they just need to open their field of thought a little..

their systematic errors checking if done right will turn up its not faster that light they discovered but the Neutrinos are warping space allowing it to move back threw space and time.

If true, then basically you can throw the entire Relativity Theory out of the window and start researching about Tachyons.

Actually black matter and black energy apologists have already said that light speed was not the true speed limitation for any particle, as black energy is predicted to be what stabilizes the central core of the milky way galaxy, and that can only be achieved if there's some type of force acting at faster speeds/energy output than the light-speed "suction" gravity well from the black holes.
