Forums - Gaming - 3DS or Vita. Which one will take Japan?

The DS at the height of its popularity on 2007 sold +130k every week

3DS only needs to match like half of that to win

What the fuck is the point of this thread? Vita isn't even out yet and it's too early to claim victory when none of them haven't seen a holiday season yet. It's a shame people are using a game that no one plays over in the west to fuel their CONSOLE WARZ.

Talking about console sales on a site about console sales? That's a shocker.

This is the type of thread that should be encouraged on this site - and talk about how MH sells well in Japan should always be coming up.

On Topic: I think at the moment it's advantage 3DS. If Vita wins it will be because Nintendo will probably shoot themselves in the foot some more.

Vita has a big screen and will probably allow you to load your own videos...
Portable pr0n on a 5 inch screen? I think we have a winner. :P

3D portable pr0n says hello!

5 inch is alot, rofl, but nothing can beat 3D boobs imho.

You don't happen to know a good place with nice 3D porn pics?

It's... um... for a friend...

Need something off Play-Asia? http://www.play-asia.com/

Based on what we know so far, I think 3DS will do better. I think Vita will do better than some people think though. I think it will do better than the PSP did.

If you read the title of the thread, you will understand we are talking about the Japanese handheld market. I wouldn't be surprised that if Monster Hunter was a portable console over there, it would be #2 or even #1 (for some weeks) on Japanese hardware sales charts.

3DS

Switch!!!

I'd say 3DS, but Japan is a land full of mysteries and surprises.

Are yall forgetting that 3ds already has an exclusive final fantasy game. Although its not a traditional rpg, hands-on reports from tgs is quite positive. That game could turn out to be a huge.

just because there is coming one or two monster hunter games to the 3ds nintendo is going to dominate?
Does the PS3 have a monster hunter? (now it does, but you know what I mean) does the Wii have a monster hunter? (hell yes and it did not sell like the psp version) Who is dominating?
Clearly the PS3
It was NEVER about just because its "Monster Hunter"
What is that AT BEST? 5million sales, wich this iteration will NEVER reach. it will strugle to get even half of that
Its about the console, its about how it works, its about the ability to interact with people

The psp did great because of Ad-hoc, people loved it, they love to play together.
Unfortunately nintendo is not doing the online thing like sony.
They already clearly said that. I just dont see them winning.
They strugle since the announcement, publisher jumped off, (ubisoft...etc.) only nintendo sells games for the moment

I would love to see nintendo rise, but they have a strange attitude since they succeeded in this generation.

The psVita on the other hand, is going to see a great launch, great titles, new titles, a incredible support from all publishers, and the device is far better, and suited for all kind of games you could imagine

so I think the Vita has a heavy advantage

I'd like to believe that the Vita's superior tech, online, media features etc will ultimately set it apart from the 3DS in the long run. I don't know where the smart phone / android type market exactly stands in Japan but I still don't see 3DS having much longevity in the future against all that.

I just really struggle with the 3DS in general though, feels to me like the only leg it has to stand on is it's games and I'm not totally convinced about them yet either.

Could you be a little more specific? You do realize that this industry is kind of all about the games. PSP soared on MH and of course was supported by other smaller games, but it's all about the games, not "the only leg it has to stand".

I do realize the social networking tools on Vita are vastly superior than those on the 3DS, but then againa new model and software update can easily bring the 3DS up to par. They can always release a 3G version in the future if they think it's necessary, but it doesn't look like it given the added subscription costs which Nintendo doesn't like. I can understand you might not want smash hits but maybe a greater flow of nice niche or A games rather than like 3 AAA games, but the thing is that it's the 3 AAA games that encourage the development of those smaller A games. It kind of goes hand in hand.

It's hard to explain what i mean but i think we're getting to an era where consoles have to sort of be in-sync with all entertainment technology. Handheld type devices are moving so quick and evolving so fast, every phone now has that big touch screen design, online features, social stuff etc and it's becoming common place. To me the 3DS sort of just feels so, archaic in design already that I just struggle to see it's place in a few years time. The idea of a handheld device having such a weak presense in the online / digital distribution space just doesn't make sense to me.

That's why we're seeing the Wii get it's successor before the other consoles, because it was behind other technologies. Everyone has a HD TV now, online gaming hit mainstream, more people use the media features on consoles etc. That's my biggest concern for the 3DS I guess but I do a pretty bad job at expressing in words what i exactly mean.

So that sort of to me means the only thing people will now buy it for is the games, which can be great and will sell consoles no doubt, but we've seen in the past Nintendo consoles go out of fasion and sort of be shunned in this way. They were the N64 and Gamecube, which despite having Mario, Zelda, Pokemon etc were second and third in overall hardware sales. In selling consoles, good games are an important piece of the jigsaw, but they're one piece of a very complex puzzle. I don't think Mario, MH and POkemon are enough to carry the console if the other pieces are missing.
