I kind of agree with you, but this arguement is not limited to JRPG's. 3rd party exclusives all together make no sense, especially when the PS3 and 360 are so similar.(1) I think all JRPG's should be multiplatform because had I not boughten a PS3, I would never have enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles.

You make so many interesting points, I dunno what to tackle first.

First of all I don't think JRPG's becoming exclusives on various platforms (Tales/XenoBlade for Wii, Tales/Lost Odyssey for 360, Tales/Valkyria Chronicles for PS3) is the reason why we are seeing less JRPG's and more mediocre ones. (2) It's more so because the Japanese audience is migrating to handhelds. Dragon Quest IX for instance was a DS title, not a PS360 one, and it's the best selling Dragon Quest to date. It's just easier to make JRPG's for handhelds, and lets face it, the genre is, and has always been reletivly niche. (3) The only real JRPG's to ever show strong (not just good) sales are Final Fantasy's, and a handful of Square enix SNES JRPG's. So why make them for home consoles when the main JRPG market mainly plays on handhelds?

(4) As for Valkryia Chronicles, I thought it sold quite well. Look into Sega JRPG's and see how much they normally sell. I believe Valkyria Chronicles is among the best selling. Also Lost Odyssey is a really good game, I'm really surprised it didn't break 1 million.

As for Tales of... The franchise has had such a weird history, and most of their games never get localized.

(5) I just wish Tales of Vesperia released outside of Japan for PS3, and I wish Tales of Xillia went multi-platform. I guess however Namco likes to mock us. I just hope any future handheld Tales of Games get localized because none of the DS ones did. (6) I hope Tales of Graces gets localized too.

(6) You've only played Vesperia correct? Get Abyss for PS2 (if your PS3 is BC).

1. I don't think they should be, that's why I want them to differentiate, I want most if not all JRPG's to stay away from the Xbox 360, it is the console where the genre will find the least success and there is not much interest in that particular type of game.

2. This is also true, but the reason why I think some JRPG's have migrated to handhelds is because they can't find a home on consoles, triggered by a bad start to the generation with all of Microsoft's exclusive deals combined with the poor sales and the fact that the PS3 wasn't selling. I don't find handhelds practical, I want a large screen and deep sound with a full sized controller, if that didn't bother me then I would probably be happy playing handhelds right now.

3. If JRPG's find a comfortable home on the PS3 in 2012, with the right marketting, I think games like Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Tales of Xillia can crack a million easily, Versus XIII could probably do 2 million. Sure JRPG's are happy on handhelds, but handhelds can't always deliver that epic experience you expect from a JRPG, the same experience you had during the SNES, PS1 and PS2 days. There is a huge demand for JRPG's on consoles that isn't being met.

4. It released fairly early on the PS3 and it was seen as one of its biggest exclusives, 1 million is excellent, it just isn't anywhere near the 5 million from flagship titles like Metal Gear Solid 4. On second thoughts, 1 million is just about right.

5. Same, if it did I wouldn't have bought a 360 though. That's another thing that irritates me, we're missing all that extra content in the Japanese version, apparently there is a contract between MS and Bandai Namco which means they can't release the game on PS3 in the West (along with the extra content), I enjoy my 360 and everything but I hate Microsoft's guts.

6. ...Haven't you heard? http://www.neoseeker.com/news/15665-tales-of-graces-f-hitting-north-america/

7. I haven't got a backwards compatible PS3, I do have a PS2 hooked up to my HDTV with component cables though, the difference is absolutely huge. As for Tales of the Abyss, it was never released in Europe, I am considering modding my console though, I want to play NTSC games.

1. I disagree. I encourage JRPG's to be released on the 360, in fact when I had both a PS3 and a 360 I bought my JRPG's for 360 to not only encourage localization, but to encourage multi-platform releases. I hate console stereotypes. I bought my 360 largely for JRPGs, and yes sales are a lot worse on the 360 then the PS3, but they are still better then on the Wii. I want American and European gamers to get into JRPG's and I know at least if the game is released on 360 it will be localized. The same can't be said for half the Tales franchise, and most Wii exclusive JRPG's.

2. PS3 is selling decently well in Japan. Japanese gamers appreciate a proper HD game as much as anyone, their TV's are on average 5 years more advanced then ours, but the problem is Japanese houses are all very tiny. So playing on a handheld makes sense. Now that handehelds have reached a point of graphics that doesn't require sprites, I can see why many gamers have decided to switch. Games similar to the PS3 are possible on the PSP, and gameplay/story come first when it comes to JRPG's.

3. Tales of and Final Fantasy are huge brand name JRPG's. I expect both games to crack 2 million, and Versus to crack 5 if it stays exclusive. I mean how long has Versus been in development for? However I'd rather have both these mega titles go multi-platform, so western audiences (who for the most part have 360's instead of PS3's) can also enjoy these games. I mean imagine if a great japanese anime never localized. Hardcore anime fans would appreciate it, but english speaking fans won't.

That huge demand for JRPG's on consoles is largly from areas outside of Japan. More reason to release these games as multi-platform titles. I don't want to have to buy another PS3 (my old one broke, but I got it used) just for Tales of Xillia, but I'm tempted.

4. 1 million for a JRPG is great. Very few RPG's sell above that and usually they are "brand name" JRPG's like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales of..., Kingdom Hearts, or Pokemon.

5. For the same reason I don't want tales of Vesperia and FFVXIII to be exclusive. I very much enjoy owning FFXIII on my 360. Feels like I'm breaking the stereotype.

6. They haven't announced which platforms Tales of Graces f will be localized for. I'm really hoping for a 360 port, otherwise I'm likely to get the game for Wii.

7. If you are going to mod your console, do it with a used console. Most modded consoles break quickly, I have lots of friend with modded systems.

People seem to be ignoring the fact that its probably not even Microsoft's choice whether Nex-Box comes to Japan or not. Its the retailers choice they are the ones that stock and sell X-Box products. As I just said retailers across Japan dropped the 360 this year, in fact barely any retailers still carry Microsoft products. The few retailers that still carry MS products have very little shelf space if any at all.

Microsoft has been virtually kicked out of Japan. Yah 1.5-million is a number of units that MS can't afford to give up, however I don't think they have any say in the matter. Japanese retailers have spoken and 360 in Japan is now all but dead, many retailers liquidated their stocks at very low prices it was all over the news.

So if Japanese retailers won't carry Microsoft products, how can Microsoft launch Nex-Box in Japan? What can they do to convince Japanese retailers to give Nex-Box shelf space when they just lost all the shelf space 360 had? None of the major Japanese retailers are likely to stock the Nex-Box.

I think if Microsoft is going to survive and launch Nex-Box in Japan they will need to have an exclusive deal with one of the retailers. Offer that retailer the ability to sell Microsoft products exclusively and that no other Japanese retailers will be carrying the product. This would mean that the 1.5 million Microsoft fans will all have to buy their games and consoles from that single retailer. This would mean increased profits for that retailer and maybe lead them to give Microsoft some good shelf space.

But even if MS signed a deal and gave a single Japanese retailer exclusive rights to selling Nex-Box. Even then PS4/WiiU/3DS/Vita would all still out sell Nex-Box even at this retailer. Meaning even with such a move they still likely wouldn't get the same shelf space as Sony or Nintendo.

However I think if MS tries to get all the major retailers in Japan to carry Nex-Box sales will be too low for all of them to continue carrying it. The retailers will loose money and drop Nex-Box the same way they dropped 360. 1.5 million sales might be good for Microsoft but the retailers don't see those sales figures as appealing.

Microsoft will have to convince a retailer to carry Nex-Box. If they do that exclusive deal I mentioned they might just be able to pull off another generation in Japan. If they try another big launch like 360 and try getting it in all the major retailers they will just flop again and this time they will never get into another Japanese retailer again. Microsoft's gotta monopolize sales of the Nex-Box to a single retailer thus giving the retailer profits that are acceptable while keeping Microsoft's foot in Japan.

Heck if Nex-Box is exclusive to that single retailer and sales do exceed 1.5-million. Then with the fourth X-Box Microsoft might be able to get a second major retailer carrying Microsoft products. Slowly advancing each generation, but to try and take on Sony and Nintendo in all of Japan's major retailers at once will spread the profits too thin and kill any chance of retailers carrying Microsoft products in the future!

Pulling their consoles out of Japan would make it look like they don't care about the fans who do enjoy Xbox. I don't think they should.

this and it's true that Japan doesn't like the Xbox as much as their consoles but 1.5 million sold is still a solid amount sold. a small amount sold in a country that loves video games is actually a decent amount when you look at how many consoles of the rest of the world buys

3. Like I said, I want fanbases to separate, I don't want consoles with identical games. If people want JRPG's, they will buy a PS3 (if they don't have one already) in the same way that if people want Gears of War they will buy an XBOX 360. Why do I always get the impression that people think the PS3 isn't allowed any exclusives? I'm sick of the developers hopping their JRPG's between consoles, keep it exclusive, the console will gain a reputation for being the home of that genre, sales will increase across the board, simple.

5. Why would you prefer owning FFXIII on the XBOX 360? I also own it on the Xbox 360 but I got the PS3 version first, why buy the inferior version to glorify the Xbox 360? One person doesn't break a "stereotype", infact it's just covering it up. Many, dare I say the majority of JRPG sales on the Xbox 360 come from JRPG hardcore's that own a PS3 as well, both you and I are part of those sales of JRPG's on the XBOX 360 but we still had the ability to buy it on the PS3 if it wasn't exclusive.

7. I might buy a pre-modded system made by someone who knows what they are doing, it shouldn't wear out just because it's modded, maybe they knocked something loose when they were playing around with it.

360 did better then the OG XBox, so I would say yes.
If the 720 does worst then the 360 then they should consider not releasing the system come their next console after the 720.

It's just that simple.

Around the Network

Xbox 720 shouldn't be released at all... Xbox 1080 should.

Seriously though, yes, they should release the next Xbox in Japan. As some have pointed out, the hand held market was far bigger than the console market in Japan this gen, yet the 360 still did much better than the original Xbox. Xbox 1080 has a shot at doing even better.

1. You don't encourage localization? Why not? I want to play Tales of Innocence, The Last Story, and XenoBlade! At least when a JRPG is announced to be 360 MP or 360 exclusive, I know it will be localized, and that means I can play it. It also allows typically western audiences to try out japanese games, and I think that's important if the JRPG genre is to survive, and not be niche.

3. Why do you want fanbases to separate? That makes no sense! I want fanbases to overlap as much as possible, so that people who have never played a JRPG might give it a shot. What if someone is a fan of two completly different genres (like me FPS and JRPG). Do you want to force people like me to buy two consoles?

The reason why you want fanbase to separate is because you bought a 360 just for Tales of Vesperia. Maybe instead of complaining that 360 got an excellent exclusive, you can try out other 360 games which I find terrific.

Okay, keep the genre exclusive. 360 got JRPG's first, and still has more of them, lets just stop developing JRPG's for PS3. Does that make any sense? If Shooters were to be 360 exclusive, and PS3 JRPG exclusive, then lets have Sony stop making games like Uncharted and Killzone. This logic of separation just makes no sense.

Let all 3rd party games be multiplatform, so no one is excluded from playing a great JRPG. There are JRPG fans, or JRPG curious people on all consoles, let them all play these games without forcing them to switch consoles.

5. FFXIII is not inferior on 360, why would you even think that? I like owning JRPG's on 360 because it's a great game and it encourages 360 owners to try out JRPG's. I mean people compare achievements/trophies, people physically come over and see the game. It makes me feel good that my 360 library is not too FPS focused. I don't like stereotypes, and I want to encourage more people to get into JRPG's.

My PS3 broke, so I can't get it on PS3, and I only bought a PS3 because my 360 was in the shop and Uncharted 2 looked good. Had I had a good reliability model 360 in the first place, I would never have bought a PS3, and just borrowed my friends to play the handful of games I am interested in. So I am a JRPG hardcore, but I shouldn't be in the PS360 owners category because I only bought it to replace my 360 while it was in the shop.

6. Learnt their lesson with Vesperia? 500k sales is still 500k, for a JRPG that is hard to ignore. I hope it comes to 360 and Wii, like I said I encourage MP. If it doesn't I'll either have to borrow a friends PS3, or wait for a BC PS4.

7. To mod a console you have to open it up, and usually flip a switch, nothing major. Nothing really comes loose. However by modding you you also make the system bypass a lot of safety sensors (like tempurature sensor), so they wear out faster. Also some parts on many systems are made defective, so it's hard to remove them and replace them perfectly. 1st gen PS2's had defected lasers for instance, and an average lifespan of 2-3 years for non-modded systems. It's reduced when you mod it.

Also look into the type of mod each system has. Some mods play different games. I remember two people who had modded PS2's, 1 couldn't play PS1 games anymore, the other couldn't play a handful of CD based PS2 games.
