Forums - General Discussion - Gay blood donations ban likely to be lifted in UK

'Most new HIV infections acquired in the UK are from men who have sex with men.'

Not sure they're true, the highest risk group is now black/foreign women I believe.

Aren't they supposed to test the blood anyways? Honestly, this seems like racial profiling, only even more stupid.

They do test the blood. If you read the OP you'd see that there is a period of time after catching HIV that it cannot be detected in the blood.

And taking blood from a straight person and saying 'oh, this person's straight and AIDS is a gay disease, so I'm sure we can use it with no worries' is such a good ideea. This is just another case of demeaning gay people.

AIDs is much much more prevalent amongst men who have sex with men in the developed world. That is simple fact. To not use that information simply because some people see it as discriminatory would risk infecting people with HIV.

Dont try to use reason, statistics and facts with people that moralise.

Homophobia is irrational, so you're one to talk.

I am not homophobic.

I also approve that known drug addicts cannot donate blood due to the same reason. And I do not care if said drug addicts are homosexual or heterosexual.

I really dislike that you are putting your "homosexuals are always discriminated" above the risk of small children being put at greater risk to get HIV via blood infusions.

So being gay is the same as being a drug addict? And heterosexuals don't engage in promiscuous sex? You are aware that the current situation allows for promiscuous heterosexuals, and even heterosexual prostitutes to donate blood, no? All this while homosexuals who don't engage in promiscuous sex are banned, and all because they're gay.

Please try some reading comprehension and dont play stupid.

I am against any group of people with higher risk of HIV exposure donating blood.

gay men are such a group. Deal with it.

The way the statement is worded is important here. Women who have immigrated from Africa are one of the most likely groups to have HIV but they mostly caught it in Africa rather than acquiring the infection in the UK.

These statistics are quite interesting.

Then you should be supporting the banning of anyone who has had more than 1 sexual partner in the past 12 months from donating blood.

of course there is that, but a lot of illegal women end up becoming prostitutes, which I think is a much greater HIV risk group than gay men.

Great finally I can donate blood!

Straight community is were HIV is raising since 2005 in the uk london especially, not sure if it is because more people are getting tested now (compare to before) but gay still stable.

Banning blood donation if u have more than one sexual partener a year is so stupid, 1 a year, i think I have 1 every second day.

And my straight friends are having even more sex than myself. So not sure where is the problem there. if you safe and respectfull, should be ok to donate blood.

It is a high HIV risk group, which is why anybody who has ever been a prostitute may not donate blood.

aha just do as you said before, don't try to reason with him, i agree with this 100%

@Sapphi This is nothing to do with being "homophobic" its to do with low risk infection of the blood and higher risk infection of the blood and Homosexuality leads to a potentioal Higher risk of blood infection...so COMMON sense would be to take more precaution in dealing with higher risk of blood infection

Well i guess that what u just said sound very homophobic.

in a world were everyone is free to have sex with whoever they want (Thank god) and we do (thank god).

Everyone is at risk. stupid people mostly.

LESS PORN AND MORE SEX!
