They went for the way that would make him least dangerous in death. A trial would have rallied extreme Islam and a burial on land would have created a shrine to him.

There is no water or air on the moon. That means that erosion does not happen there like it does on the Earth. The footprints will not last forever, but they will last for a very long time. I have seen some estimates that put it at around 10,000 to 100,000 years. Even then, the lower portion of the lander, rover, and flag will still be there.
