I mean hell MHTri didn't sell even a million outside of Japan now did it? so much for the global appeal creation. devs can't be THAT stupid surely. DQ never had a big appeal on home consoles outside of Japan, it's just the nature of the game. But the highest selling home console DQ belongs to a sony platform also. I would be honestly surprised if the next MonHun on home consoles didn't end up on ps3...would be ideal to go multiplat with WiiU

Since when was 1 mil a benchmark for "big appeal"? The game shipped 800k+ outside of Japan. This is bad now? DQ VIII sold a lot but DQ IX sold more than that, and Nintendo is very intent to continue pushing the game in the West. DQ IX shipped 1.02 mil+ outside of Japan which is great for a JRPG, as well as selling a ton in Japan.

That's not to say it wouldn't sell a lot as a Wii/PS3 multi game, but it's not very necessary.

seriously >_> you guys are way too defensive and hence see things that are not there. who said it's bad? hell thats good! never said anything to suggest its bad.

800+ is still less than 1 mil. so I didn't make a mistake in what I said, it's factually correct. you are also confusing this home console release with a handheld release. different story altogether there. IF this was a handheld game..by all means DS/3DS all the way! no need to bother with the psp at all for outside of japan. I wouldn't have even argued against that all. but this is home consoles we are talking about. different markets to consider. ninty has not displayed more capability here than Sony at all.

the simple reality here is if it was ps3 plus wii and maybe later wiiu it would have sold A LOT more than what it would now :) don't kid yourself thinking otherwise. SE aren't that stupid and if Ninty didn't make it worth their while they would have done just that.

Don't make a thread, chances are it'll just turn into the carnival of stupid. DQ X would sell well on pretty much any platform, it's DQ. DQ also isn't known for multiplat anyway...yes it's coming to the WIi U as well, but rather as a port, it's more like an extension to the Wii getting it since you can even use the same profile on both consoles. Isn't Nintendo publishing this game or something?

I believe the deal to be similar to the Dragon Quest deal. Nintendo promised to try to make the series a success in the West.

A charge usually brought against Nintendo consoles is that only their own titles sell. So, publishing series like DQ or Monster Hunter with the same support Nintendo gives their own titles makes them appear as Nintendo properties. That alone increases the chances of success significantly.

At least that is what I think Nintendo promised. Sony would have given them money for exclusivity as well, but their chances of turning MonHun and DQ into global brands might be lower than Nintendo's in the developers' eyes.

A quote from a GAF poster that I agree with. You say this only benefits Nintendo. If that were true the devs wouldn't make it exclusive would they. It benefits SE too.

Edit: Also, if you're such a big fan of DQ ( As I assumed from reading your posts), how about playing on the console it's on. What does it matter if it's on a Nintendo or Sony console? Favorite Franchises > brand loyalty.

I don't get it..most of you guys seem to read what you THINK is there yet you end up saying exactly the same thing I'm saying...this is getting silly. OFCOURSE there must be some sort of a deal going on between the two parties...if not it's a rather stupid business move

btw I strongly disagree on the MH/DQ global appeal crap..sony has done it before..give them the chance and they will do it again :) Sony has maintained great sales for RPG's in and out of Japan. and honestly man..how the hell can you argue a multiplat release wouldn't have benefited SE and sales? I mean really? none of you have yet to come up with one decent argument against that. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what's going on here.they made it exclusive cuz Ninty 'sponsored' them. nothing more nothing less and I'm getting tired of repeating myself without being understood and argued back with fluff. I mean hell MHTri didn't sell even a million outside of Japan now did it? so much for the global appeal creation. devs can't be THAT stupid surely. and no, if you read my posts you will see I have clearly stated I don't give a rats ass about this series or most RPG's in general so this doesn't affect me the slightest. I'm just pointing out the obvious, it would have done much better going multi wii/ps3 and wiiu sales wise, only logical reason it didn't was cuz of a dealing between the companies. logic > jumping to conclusions, I bought a ds for games like Layton..would have bought a wii too if I had few games in it that really interested me..but it doesn't..I have access to xboxes very conveniently hence why I played Halo reach and others and had no problem. Don't misunderstand the kind of gamer I am..thanks to new layton games etc I will without fail buy a 3ds sooner or later as well

You're fooling yourself if you think the devs dont want DQ to sell as much as it can outside of Japan as possible.

Not sure why you act like you know exactly what should be done with the franchise and others are fools to argue against what you say. Open your mind. Your opinion is not undisputable.

Also, it's important to consider (if I understand correctly you do care about the multi-plat argument) the difference between sales success and critical success, and the balance of the two. One could argue that if a title is sold on two platforms it will have more sales potential given the greater userbase. However, for the health of the series would you say that FFXIII was aided by going multi-plat to the 360 or hurt? Yes it sold twice as much as it would have otherwise, but people are now less enamoured with the series. Despite its supposed flaws (I never played FFs past FFX-2), fans would have defended the title given its exclusive status. Health-wise, for the IP, FFXIII would've been better sheltered as an exclusive.

Apart from that I'm happy either way, but I still do believe exclusivity has its place, purpose and pros, as well as its obvious cons.

people hated ff13 not cuz it was multiplat (other than the initial rage on the net) they hated it cuz of the departure and linear nature of the game. we had so many threads on the subject. fans defending a title cuz its exclusive doesn't affect the quality or the overall reception either. not saying exclusive games don't have it's pros cuz I totally agree. but considering how wii and ps3 are in japan and ww currently, multiplat would have benefited this game the most.

I can appreciate that. Tough call but I believe the pros and cons are in balance and the benefits could weight one way or the other. I do agree that the nature of PS3 and Wii in japan is quite similar, so a multiplat for this Japan-appealing title would be a good fit. Though swaying from the tradition of the series it could have been a good time for expansion/change. Also, the Wii and PS3 already have their prestige when it comes to RPGs so that argument might not apply totally to this case. You may be right.

As for FFXIII as I said I was aware of the flaws I was just pointing out that the bias of a community can affect its critical success, despite a lower quality game. For this we disagree but that's okay.

keep in mind tho...DQX already has some fans going into rage mode with its MMO-ish reveal, monthly payments and the constant internet connection talk tho I doubt most of that crappy features will come to the west cuz it will likely be an instant bomba here if it did. and also some of the fans who were angry were angry because of how the 360 version might have affected the ps3 version...they 'speculated' that with things like bluray vs dvd and development time taken for a 360 version etc took away from the game...but in this case, it's already being developed for wiiu so it's already getting delayed cuz of it (andriasang reported today that the game has been in development for over 6 years now) so a ps3 port would have hurt it, and porting from wii to ps3 won't harm the original versions quality in anyway, not in visuals, scales, content or anything.

but yeah..its done lol no use in going back and forth on this matter

lolwut? you are fooling yourself if you think what you just said made any sense whatsoever!

how the hell can going multiplat REDUCE the total sales outside of japan? more consoles = larger market to expose this not so popular in the west franchise to. it really is that simple.

I'm not saying anyone is a 'fool'. you are free to think what you think..wth should i care :S I'm just telling you my take on the situation. if you have anything but bu bu they must have had a reason..and that reason not being a deal with ninty aka moneyhatting I would be glad to hear it.

There is nothing factually correct about saying that 1 mil means "big appeal" while you can just laugh off 800k+ and say "oh, so much for big appeal!" This is just a benchmark you made up. It's obvious that if any big game was multiplat across enough systems rather than exclusive/limited to a few platforms (in the case of DQ X) it would sell better anyway...but not all games are like that. Even Versus XIII is still exclusive (for now).

wait you think 800k = mass appeal? that's a whole different subject to discuss then. my point is that ninty has not proved that they are any better at creating more appeal/awareness than sony when it comes to these franchises outside of japan.

and Versus 13 will most prob go multiplat outside of japan and if it does, will sell way more than it would have just on the ps3 since ps3 and 360 both are very strong outside of japan. my point still stands

Large appeal yes, mass appeal no. It's impossible for MH to have "mass" appeal outside of Japan because of the type of game it is. Platform doesn't matter. Capcom sure seem happy with the way Nintendo are doing things with them saying how well MH3 did (both in Japan and outside) and MH3G now coming to the 3DS. Same with DQ which is pretty much Nintendo exclusive for the forseeable future.

Bingo! that's exactly what I think as well..if the ps2 couldn't do it..I doubt any home console can. and capcom shuld be happy..those games sold really well and doubt many people didn't see the 3ds version of Tri not coming...same way as people should see the probability of MH4P being on the Vita high. DQ games being on the DS makes sense..the device sells really really well. But if by any chance the next sony console performs better than WiiU, fully expect it to come back to Sony, it's just how they handle the franchise.

Obviously, it's time to let 'Mike' have a shot, and if not them, then maybe 'Ap'.

? i made that statement in reply to a poster saying it must be because SE sees ninty being more capable to create mass appeal in the west with these franchises, without a proper reason for it. Mike already had it's shot, result wasn't something write home about or to think AP can't match it. btw...what's ap? lol

Clearly there's a deal between NIntendo and SE with the series right now. But that's just the way it is.

which is pretty much the reality of it and is what I said. the only thing is tho doesn't matter if it a port or not since most multiplats are ported over from the lead platform afaik, wii/wiiu IS going multiplatform by definition. it's like ps3/vita games...connected but two platforms.

In my view, the exclusivity of a game holds a sense of prestige. I believe Final Fantasy lost that in my eyes after Final Fantasy XIII. I think it's a good thing for games like this to remain exclusive to a console, as it's usually the community that drives the game, and if that community also feels that sense of prestige they will drive the game forwards. It happened with Final Fantasy in the Nintendo days (as well as with Megaman, Castlevania and others), it happened alot in the Playstation 1 days (Metal Gear Solid, FFVII, Megaman Xs V onward, ...), and it shouldn't stop. It shouldn't be there for everything, but I think that for prestigious games like Final Fantasy, DQ and Monster Hunter it should remain.

And I know you agree with me seeing your enthusiasm for all the exclusives in the Vita thread (which I have been participating in).

Also, Vita/PS3 or Wii/WiiU, though technically multiplatform, in my eyes does not enter the above discussion in relevancy in any way.

if what you say is true, then why did FF7 have such record numbers?? Despite the series being on Ninty systems for 2 gens??  I disagree respectfully, most people will go where the games are, no matter what console

Good question. To be honest it's because FF7 was a revolutionary game on a revolutionary console (Playstation), and that it was able to take advantage of all those revolutionary features the PS supported (FMV playback, orchestral audio, movie-like production thanks to support from media giant Sony).

I believe, true to what I'm proporting, that indeed FF7 would have been less of a success had it been multi-plat.

Well to be fair, FF 7 WAS multiplat. There was a PC version that released later, dont know how well that did. If your talking N64, that version would have sucked because it would have lacked the features you already mention, plus N64 has a smaller user base than PS, so people would still just buy the PS version and it would have sole the same IMHO

You're absoltely right about the PC version (that's the version I played). But to be honest it isn't relevant to the prestige argument because PC's were not considered segregated as much as Nintendo and Sony platforms were at the time. We're going back deep but I think we both remember.

Add to that the political implications of working with both Manufacturers (and sponsors) at that time and FFVII would have ended a disaster. I mean, a different time with different factors, but in general I believe my point still stands to some degree. At least a great majority of PS fans were enthusiastic about the game given its exclusivity (that I remember strongly) the same could be said about MGS. That enthusiasm would have been greatly diminished given the offering of that game on the other system, even if both systems were on par technically. I may be wrong but that's just how I see it. The enthusiasm at least would have diminished, as it is today for most multiplats.

Your right, and from what i heard it wasnt that great of a port either. I have both versions, but i could never get it too run on Vista, and i tried different forums to get it working, but gave up.

As for your 2nd point IMHO i would have to say it was the advertisment. If it had been multiplat it would not have been pushed so hard by SOny. in the US that game had crazy commercials and ads. Ive never seen an JRPG before or since that had that kind of marketing. But i do agree with you to an extent, look at FF13, despite having a much bigger user base in the US and having paid exclusive advertisment and bundling the damn thing, the 360 version STILL got its ass kicked by PS3 version IN the US

DQ never had a big appeal on home consoles outside of Japan, it's just the nature of the game. But the highest selling home console DQ belongs to a sony platform also. I would be honestly surprised if the next MonHun on home consoles didn't end up on ps3...would be ideal to go multiplat with WiiU

and no, if you read my posts you will see I have clearly stated I don't give a rats ass about this series or most RPG's in general so this doesn't affect me the slightest.

Your opinion is not undisputable.

lolwut? you are fooling yourself if you think what you just said made any sense whatsoever!

how the hell can going multiplat REDUCE the total sales outside of japan? more consoles = larger market to expose this not so popular in the west franchise to. it really is that simple.

I'm not saying anyone is a 'fool'. you are free to think what you think..wth should i care :S I'm just telling you my take on the situation. if you have anything but bu bu they must have had a reason..and that reason not being a deal with ninty aka moneyhatting I would be glad to hear it.

Hhmm....apparently you think the only reason a game could go exclusive is moneyhats. There are no other possible factors.

Not wasting my time here. You've made up your mind. You can't possibly be wrong, no one else can possibly be right.
