Forums - Nintendo - Dolphin 3.0 Wii/Gamecube Emulator (7719 build) is awesome

The only thing where Nintendo could take action is if a bios was included in the emulator. That's copyright material.

"Despite three years of active development as an open source project, Rydgård told me Nintendo has never contacted the group with legal threats or demands. Dolphin actually skirts the legal issues that concern most emulators--while it's entirely legal to dump your own ROM images and system BIOS files, obtaining those files online enters shady territory."

"Unlike the UltraHLE guys (of N64 emulation fame), we've never heard from Nintendo at all. . . .The emulator itself is legal: as long as you rip games that you buy and play them with Dolphin there's nothing that's even questionable going on. Dolphin does not require the use of a BIOS file due to the 'OS' on Nintendo systems being built into each and every game."

100% legal.

And even downloading games you own (if you don't want to rip them) is legal in many countries.

You still need a something ripped from the Wii for near perfect audio emulation, or so that's what their last site said.

Even if so, the normal sound output via XAudio2 or DSound is very good and doesn't require anything like that. Dolphin itself remains 100% legal.

I remember that I tried to use dolphin for Wii gaming but I think my DVD drive wasn't capable of recognizing Wii discs. Does anybody have a link to a cheap DVD drive that works well for dolphins purposes and is cheap?

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Do you have a Wii? If yes, there is a much simpler solution by using a softmod. I know giving links to certain websites is not allowed here, so PM me if you need any instructions.

EDIT: Those (LG-8164b or LG-8163b or LG-8162b or LG-8161b) DVD drives do all work

I recently setup Dolphin on my HTPC since the WiiU doesn't play GameCube games. The games look great but sadly they don't seem to run well. I haven't actually played one yet since I haven't set up a controller yet, just let the menu screen rub on Windwaker.

The PC I'm running it on isn't powerful at all, I forget the specs, what are the minimum requirements to run a GameCube game well?

How well does the GameCube controller translate to the 360 controller?

I hadn't planned on ripping my Wii games to the HTPC, but what are the minimum specs you need to run a Wii game? (I actually have most of them ripped since I did it for my Wii so I didn't have to use discs)

If it matters I'm launching these through xbmc. I haven't really messed with these much, I'm still just slowly getting everything added and aging issues getting my nes games to show up in the right color palette in full screen.

-edit-

doh, saw your post with system specs and my HTPC isn't quite there. Plenty of ram, but my processor is only 2.7 GHz.

didnt build the system for gaming, just movies and to be a black hole of information. Currently have about 300 movies and like 15 different TV show seasons on it (with most being BluRay) and barely made a dent in the storage.

-edit #2-

amd worry not, all the games and movies on my PC are ripped myself and then the discs are safely stored in my closet. No downloading or sharing te rips from me.

Could you give the exact name of the processor? Single/Dualcore? Mine for example is a Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 from 2008. It is clocked @3,16Ghz by default and still runs Gamecube games at constant 60fps. Maybe you should try overclocking your CPU or if it already is/you don´t want to risk that cap the fps at 30?

Haven't looked at the system requirements, but I'd say a ~2GHz dual core is enough.
Most games run at 30FPS on my brother's 4 year old notebook. (which was ~900€ when he bought it). Not a gaming one but decent nontheless for its time.

I hope you are talking about GCN only? Would be sad if a 4-year old notebook beat my 4-year old PC^^

Is one of those ones with the graphics card integrated into the motherboard (again, only built this to watch media, not lay games)

AMD A4-3400 APU with Radeon HD Graphics @2.70 GHz

4 gigs of ram

This is probably due to your GPU then. Did you tinker around with the settings a bit? I remember I had to change some settings when I used Dolphin on my last notebook due to having only 256mb of VRam. Disabling fog and anti aliasing might help.

My biggest gripe with Dolphin is that some random games still won't run well unless you've got an extremely fast CPU (like 4GHz). I've got a 2.3GHz i7 (Ivy Bridge), 1GB of VRAM and 8GB RAM - some games run perfect even in 1080p with all sorts of effects turned on, others like F-Zero or Viewtiful Joe don't run well at all. When I run F-Zero GX in 720p I get a maximum of 20fps but CPU load is only at 50%. Metroid Prime has serious sound problems that can only be fixed by downloading a sound chip emulator that uses huge amounts of resources. I even have slowdowns in Sonic Adventure 2 (!) but I can play Pikmin 2 with 100 Pikmin on screen in 1080p. It's just not as optimized as PSX / N64 generation emulators yet.
