@First bolded: However if Vita sales have a hard time keeping up due to the fact that the 3DS will have an incredible holiday season with no competition whatsoever from Vita anywhere except Japan, you can bet that over time those 3rd parties will flock to the more successful system. Therefore, saying that 3DS will NEVER get better support is a bit premature at this point, as we simply don't know how the Vita will perform yet. @Second bolded: Here I completely disagree... it does matter. Coupled with the cheaper price, a Mario game (albiet 3D), and Mario Kart 7, this holiday will see 3DS flying off the shelves due to Nintendo's first party titles. And honestly, it's hard to imagine any of the announced Vita games' sales power put together equaling what 2D Mario and Pokemon alone are going to do for the sales of 3DS. But look at what the price drop has already done for the 3DS, and that's still with just one game out that people really care about. Point being that if over time the 3DS has a much better installed base, it'll garner more support from 3rd parties, even if they're less "console" type experiences and more "hand-held" experiences. |
Yeah, I guess you're right. I only said that it wouldn't get it because I was just depressed. I didn't really mean what I said.
I do believe 3DS will get its 3rd party support back.
I think the worst situation could be the same fate as the Wii... It will sell well but if you are looking forward to something it will be basically all Nintendo titles with here and their a third pary game you get very excited about but ends up an dissapointment. Doubt it will happen that drastic, it is just that Sony is doing more right with their PS Vita than Nintendo with their 3DS..

Don't misunderstand me; I hope Vita does really well. I love the fact that it has dual analogue control and the announcement of a Bioshock game is likely enough to get me to buy one right there. But look at what the price drop has already done for the 3DS, and that's still with just one game out that people really care about. Having good software sales out of the gate is really what matters as it sets up momentum provided sales of said titles are good. This is why 3DS lost momentum is software sales are lacking and lots of studios aren't sure if it's worth the investment, games are cancelled etc. If publishers are waiting to see how successful 3DS will be then you have 18 month to 2 years after it is deemed a success before the software actually hits which may very well be too little too late. I'm pretty sure even at the new pricepoint the DS will probably still outsell the 3DS with the exception of maybe Japan(and after price cut hardware sales stabalizes there I doubt it unless love plus is a way larger seller than I thought).
Super Mario 3D land wont do much for 3DS hardware sales. 3D mario just doesn't sell like that. The DS had 3d Mario at launch and got beat by the PSP with the same price difference to boot. Mario Kart doesn't dig systems out of a slump. It sure didn't with the N64 or GC. It also doesn't matter if PSV titles don't equal 2D mario or Pokemon as 3ds doesn't have either and wont for 18 months to 2 years either(probably longer given the time between pokemon iterations and Grey will be a DS game). In japan the only place where there will be competition between the two this holiday PSV has MH and we know how much Japan loves some Monster Hunter. In that region it's about as big as Pokemon.
Has the price drop done much for anyones software but Nintendo's? If not that's not really reason for 3rd parties to hop on board after trepidation. You saw what it took to get them on the Wii after initial worries despite the overwhelming success of the system(they never really did despite some minor successes). 3rd parties are very sketchy when it comes to Nintendo systems.
There are like 50 third party 3DS games coming out between now and December. I hardly consider that doomed support.

That is the bigger question. Where are the games that are going to get people to buy this moreso than the 3DS? Uncharted? Killzone? They certainly aren't going to overmatch any of Nintendo's heavy-hitters.
Vita's great hope is that Japanese third party support swings overwhelmingly in their favor. Western third parties will never treat handhelds as more than an afterthought, and Sony's first-party support can't beat Nintendo's. At the end of the day their hope is to continue the PSP's Japanese legacy

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
Although whether PSV can actually do that is questionable, especially if Nintendo manages to snag a MH title for its handheld.

Using Mario 64DS as an example of how Super Mario 3D Land will perform is terribly inaccurate. You are comparing what is essentially a port of a then 8 year old game that controlled horribly to a brand new Mario game that is tailor-made for the hardware it's on. While it won't move systems anywhere near what a 2D Mario will, it'll do far more for the 3DS than Mario 64DS did for the DS.
Your point citing the history of DS and PSP doesn't help your argument, either. The PSP absolutely did indeed start much stronger than DS and just look what happened there. Furthermore, both systems released almost simultaneously in Japan, with PSP only behind the DS by four months in America. The 3DS, however, will have a 10 month or more lead over Vita in all regions, and will have a far bigger install base than last gen before Vita's on the market everywhere. And if you don't think Mario Kart 7 will aid in the 3DS selling in droves this holiday, you're sadly mistaken. All of this when Nintendo won't even have played the Pokemon or 2D Mario cards yet... so it absolutely does matter.
Finally, Monster Hunter Vita could very well make the system sell remarkably in Japan this holiday if it does release for it by the end of the year, but first, Monster Hunter cannot compete with Pokemon worldwide, and second, Capcom hinted that it would, in all likelihood, come to both platforms eventually anyway.

Don't be so cynical. Its pretty obvious that Nintendo likes to time their announcements, so I wouldn't count your chickens just yet.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
