Evolution is always a nice thing. So is more sales data and discussion.

I guess a simple way to think of it is that we'll end up with a BoxOfficeMojo-like site (VGChartz) and an IMDB-like site (the new site) but obviously built around games and not movies. IMDB actually bought BOM a couple of years back so there are links between the two and they are owned by the same company (Amazon) but operate as two different sites and have a different audience and content. I'm sure there is a fair amount of crossover (I use both regularly) but both sites have a very different purpose, different communities and different day-to-day management just like we will have with the new sites. As you can see on BOM, the focus is purely on the box office data for each film, predictions, forum etc. It has much a smaller but far more dedicated userbase than IMDB which obviously has far more general interest.

VGChartz will be very specialised and have a close-knit community dedicated to game sales and discussions / articles while the new site will be a huge game db based around reviews, cheats, walkthroughs, game-related news, game-related forums etc. Both sites will have my attention but both will have their own management who will be running the day-to-day elements - I don't intend one to have any more focus than the other.

Clearly the new site will have the most growth potential in terms of traffic (compare IMDB and BOM) due to the fact it will have wider appeal but both sites will be having their own team of writers, developers etc and both will be going for many many years yet.

Good to know. I use BOM but not IMDB.

Also, BOM looks quite "amateurish", so am suprised it is owned by amazon.

We have some ideas... might start a competition to see what people can come up with

vgdb.com would be a good choice, since it's simple and straight to the subject.but it seems it's already taken

EDIT : it has to be a dot com domain right?since i've read that you insisted on having a dot com domain back when you made the site

You think? BOM is a huge site, probably the reason I started VGC to begin with and the inspiration for most of the early designs / features.

Yes, I think these days vgchartz definitely looks better.

AFAIK BOM has not changed the layout in like 5 years?

Content there is still fantastic though. Thats why I visit there every Monday.

i like bom one of my favs,so it sounds like they will be completely separate logins and forums which makes sense as it would be no different to now,it has to have the same game datbase right though with all the info,i hope we get to choose to carry over to one of the sites

Nice! It's been awesome to see VGC grow, but after all the experimentation, I think this is the right way for the discussions to return to form.

Interesting development, I'll be looking at this closely. If it's done right and coincides with the release of the new consoles the forum community should be booming in a little while.
