I predicted back in 2005 that Revolution would only be as successful if the DS was. I was right. But I did have a hard time imagining Nintendo as the console king.

| weezy said: At the 1st day of 2008.... 1 year into the "next gen" Nintendo Wii will be on the verge of hitting 20 Mil? While the Sony PS3 is nearing 9 mil in the same time? And 2 years into the game, Microsoft has only gotten rid of 16 mil 360's?
Is this the year of price cuts yet again for 360? because I see sony is silently creeping on microsoft's ho hum sales.
I predict Sony and Microsoft duking it out by dropping prices while Nintendo just continues to do its own thing on its own terms :) |
I think the only reasons the PS3 even got the sales it did this year were brand loyalty (especially in some European countries) and the RROD problem with the 360. Basically the decisions Sony made on purpose were bad ones and hurt the PS3's chances for success. On the other hand the things that hurt the 360 were unforseen (it's not like the RROD probem was purposely planned like including the cell and blu-ray in the PS3). Basically Sony lucked out because Microsoft stumbled through an unforseen problem.
Had the 360 never encountered the RROD problem I have no doubt the system would have blown past the 20 million mark sometime in 2007.
As for the Wii I don't think games like Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Paper Mario, deserve much credit if any for the system's success and that Wii Sports deserves pretty much all the credit. Without Wii Sports I believe the system would have been another Gamecube because it's not like the Nintendo hardcore would have suddenly ballooned up out of nowhere, if there were that many of them the Gamecube would have been far more sucessful.
It seems Nintendo has had it planned out all along. They had their plan of attack since the beginning (present sig as refrence)
Of course Wii Sports has sold more Wiis than anything else. It's probably the most brilliant pack-in since SMB1. Can you think of any game that does a better job of demonstrating, in a simple and efficient manner, all of the strengths of the Wii's new control setup? 'Cause I can't. It doesn't satisfy the self-proclaimed "hardcore" for long, but then, it wasn't made for their sake. Wii Sports was made as a tech demo, and ended up being a brilliant system seller in the process.
Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

@Legend11,
Uhm, MS made its decision when they chose to skimp on cooling solutions for the 360. They may not have said "Hey lets engineer heat problems into our console!" but it was still their decisions that got them there.
As for your comments on the Wii, I disagree. Wii sports is definitely a big part of the Wii's success but I think you're losing grip with reality if you actually believe games like MP3, SMG, etc.. aren't also playing a major role in its continued success.
It would be equivalent to this:
"As for the 360 I don't think games like Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Bioshock, deserve much credit if any for the system's success and that Halo 3 deserves pretty much all the credit. Without Halo 3 I believe the system would have been another Xbox because it's not like the Microsoft hardcore would have purchased the console without the promise of Halo 3, if there were that many people who wanted the console for reasons other than Halo the Xbox would have been far more sucessful."
@legend11
what r u on? be real! people have a lot of curiosity. even if they may not like the wii, they would have tried it anyway. they would play a game with motion sensing and all of a sudden fall in love with it! then it would sell through word of mouth and everyone would get one cause their relatives or job workers or whatever would tell them! also, the wii sold better when these titles like galaxy came out! wiisports is just a tech demo. it wouldn't cause people to buy it! it's the lineup of wii games they are looking for! same with 360! 360 wouldn't have been beating ps3 most of the year if it didn't have te awesome and almost snes kind of lineup! (scratch that, snes's lineup will be the best forever!)
Damn things have changed since 2009 began. Here are my new visions for the end of the generation.
Wii: 135 mil
Ps3: 85 mil
360: 60 mil

Oh they've been revealing it for years now, its just that most people ignored it as marketing speak instead of a coming sea change
Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

What I said isn't equivalent to that at all. Do you think there would be less Wii sales now if MP3 for example had not been released? Do you think there would be less Wii sales now if Super Paper Mario had not been released? Ok and finally how many sales of Wii can be credited to SMG that wouldn't have sold otherwise? If it hadn't been released would the Wii have sold millions less and had been easily available on store shelves during November and December? If the Super Mario franchise is so godly why didn't Super Mario Sunshine push the Gamecube into first place during the Gamecube's first year? Yeah whatever...
