It's a CD key. If anything this just shows that even in DRM the consoles take around a decade or more to catch up.

Not really that simple. On PC, I doubt it's very common that CD keys are in use unless the game has online accounts that use the CD key, which is not very common for older games.

I can install and play single-player Starcraft with any CD-Key, but I can't get online unless it's unique. That was 13 years ago.

You can't get online if nobody else with the same CD key is online.  That is completely and totally different.  That means if you sell it (I sold Starcraft as well as Warcraft 3), there will be no problems whatsoever for the people who purchased it, because they are the only ones using those CD keys.

With the online passes, they are making it so it is unique to one account (I think it is account as well as the original ps3 it was validated on).  If you sell it, the other people can't play online, even though nobody else is currently online with it.

One allows somebody to sell it and the other person to have full access (it simply limits the access of one copy to one user at a time), the other makes it so should somebody sell it, the other person has to buy an additional pass to play it.

You honestly believe that? If you do, I have several dozens of games I could sell to you for VERY cheap.

AFAIK there's tons of games that only check that they key is not in use at the same moment, not if it's never been used.

Yea, that is what Starcraft does.  I think what he is saying though, is that do you really trust somebody else to not have copied down the CD key, and just continue playing the game after selling it?

Personally, I'm actually honest, apparently unlike some people, so people who have bought games like that from me in the past have had 0 issues whatsoever.  I don't know that I would trust buying games like that from somebody else, however.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

That's how I used to play CS at the begining... "go see John he'll get you what you need", here's a CD and a CD key.... I left my comp on all the time with CS minimized because once you passed the verification, you didn't need to check the CD key again untill you restarted CS....

Eventually I bought the game cause I really liked it but hey ... people do share CD keys that are not their own ^^.

(tested UT2004 in the same way... I own it too now :p)

I don't really trust but people who keep using the CD key even after selling the game don't really seem to be that common.

I kind of support them although I don't think they're the best solution, I do think developers deserve to get paid for their work and used games do hurt them but splintering the online community isn't the best way to improve sales of games
