Forums - General - Confused white guy attacks government building in Norway with massive bomb and shoot up a youth camp - at least 87 dead.

Seriously though... stupid political arguments aside. (Which i can't even believe are being made.)

How was there no one with a gun to shoot this guy after the first 10 or so victims?

I mean, there were no armed guards in this political kids retreat?

That just seems reckless.

This is Norway. These things don't happen here, nothing of this sort ever has. Besides stabbings out on town and a murder case now and then, there haven't been hostile actions like these since WWII in Norway.

Its different here, not everyone owns a gun. Do you send armed escorts with your kids to summer camp or summer school in the US? This is kind of the same thing. This summer camp has been going on for about 40 years without a single incident, the same with the retreats of the other youth wings of other parties, no one could ever have seen this coming and the need for armed guards and police would have seemed ludicrous to anyone.

And now we have the "honor" of housing the worst spree killer (with guns) in the history of the world... Unfathomable, to say the least.

I'd like to think there is one security guard with a gun... or at least someone near by.

I know there is at schools.

Spree Killers are an eventuality, that it hasn't happened in norway for a long time is probably just a testament to the small population size.

Nobody had a cell phone?

I'm just... confused how so many people could of been shot.

Always blame the muslims, that's the easiest way. If you think about it, it could lead to invasions and more oil!!

The media is so controlled that it hurts
http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2011/07/22/qa-why-norway/?hpt=hp_t1

Media corporations that people believe are serious are only an outlet for the government to spread lies and brainwash their people. It's just so sad and I can't believe many people are too quick to jump on conclusions and blame muslims this fast.

it's almost sickening when the event was first broadcasted, they jump on their prejudices and blamed the muslims. This is before concluding who the real perpretrator is and I know you guys are going to say that it was a educated guess, but it really damages the image of muslims and bluring the line even more.

So it wasn't a jihadist after all?

Shocking, though it would explain why they targeted a labour party youth camp specifically if they were of a right-wing persuasion

Sorry but maybe next time you shouldn't jump the gun like the media.

Obviously, an event like this could have been prevented had Norway increased screening of native born 12 year old girls along with their grandparents.

Yeah, I'm sure increasing the screening of people of Middle Eastern descent would've prevented the blonde blue eyed Norwegian from commiting this. This event really shows why racial profiling is inherently flawed.

Where did I say anything about basing it on racial terms, or is your assumption that everyone who rejects the idea that a 12 year old girl is likely to be a terrorist is a racist?

Stop trying to spin this in order to save face.

So in what way does question the security threat posed by a 12 year old girl or her grandparents imply racial profiling?

If you look at killing sprees or terrorist attacks they tend to be carried out by single males who have no children who have close ties to a radical political, fundamentalist religious background, or have a long string of extreme behaviour that acts as "warning signs". With information that is readily available or already collected by the government you could realistically eliminate 95% of people from being likely terrorists without ever considering ethnic background.

Of course, we can completely ignore rational classification and continue to search the diapers of elderly women because it would be inappropriate to consider that not all people are likely terrorists.

It took the police 45 minutes to get there, which is not surprising if you look up the area in googlemaps.

Utøya, 8647, Hemnes, Nordland, Norway, Very remote sparsely populated area.

I would rather have stricter gun control then posting security guards with guns everywhere.

Also you were just talking about stricter immigration policies... in this same thread... so that your suddenly acting holier then thou about something he didn't even say is... really just funny.

Touche. Ouch. Still, I stand by my stricter immigration policies claim.

Except the probem with that is... when someone DOES have a gun... which criminals always will... they can do whatever the hell they want until the police can get out there.

Like... say this very case.

I mean, i'd rather people not comit crimes then have cops...

yet...

From my understanding police officers don't carry guns in Norway. That's what tipped off the kids from the camp that there was something wrong with the guy. The moment he pulled out his gun. (according to interviews)
