Forums - Gaming - Microsoft Apparently Bringing Forward Release Of Xbox 720 To 2013 Due To Wii U

Online gaming publication Eurogamer has been told by multiple industry sources that Microsoft’s successor to the Xbox 360 will be revealed at E3 2012, and will be released in 2013. Apparently Microsoft were previously looking to bring out the console in 2014 but due to Nintendo’s unveiling of Wii U Microsoft has decided to bring the release date forward.

Eurogamer has also heard a 2014 release of the next Xbox was planned by Microsoft, but this has now been brought forward to 2013 as a result of Nintendo’s confirmed 2012 launch of the Wii U.

Ha ha, disruption again... but not necessarily in a good way. What does this mean? Well, either the tech will be more immature and expensive than intended due to the accelerated release, or it will be watered down. Shame on MS and Sony they should have held their ground.*

* And anyone who does NOT think that Sony will accelerate the release of PS4 due to Nintendo and MS jumping in (haha) is delusional.

Guess I'll wait to buy it in 2014 anyway. Once bitten twice shy. Actually twice bitten :/

Well it makes sense. The Wii U will basically have all the nintendo first party exclusives, along with ports of the many third party games that are the reason the hd consoles are actually leading the wii in userbase. God knows microsoft and sony will be screwed if the yearly cod illiterations have an equivalent port available on the wii.

if true, its pretty impressive that Microsoft didn't have to release another console for 8 years after the xbox 360 released. I hope that the billion dollars rrod cost microsoft directly, and millions it cost them in a tarnished reputation means the next xbox will be far more reliable even at launch...

I hope Microsoft doesn't try to rush the next system. If they do, it could mean a half baked OS, and hardware at launch, and potentially a new breed of RROD-like issues. They should wait to see how people will react to the Wii U first. Prematurely launching would be bad for them. Sony won't admit it tot he public, but if Microsoft AND Nintendo launch before them, they'll have to jump in as well, so I hope they are planning the PS4.
