Is Sony Quietly Removing a PS3 Feature?

A tipster sends us rumored word (and image) of an incoming replacement model for the 160GB Playstation 3 which brings with it a change in the way some people will hook the console up to their HD television.

The new "K" chassis, which Sony will begin shipping to retailers this week, will require customers to use an HDMI cable to play a game or watch a movie in high definition, according to the tipster. The component out, which on all other models supports high definition video modes, will no longer do so, according to a memo apparently sent around at GameStop today.

All future models of the PS3, the memo continues, will require an HDMI cable for high definition output. Previous models will not be updated to require HDMI for high definition viewing.

Finally, as GameStop puts it, offering the HDMI cables to customers picking up a PS3 will "also help you drive add-on sales."

We've reached out to Playstation for comment on the rumor and to ask why, if it's true, the change is being made. It sounds like it could be tied to digital rights management. Stay tuned

That's odd. I wonder how much it actually saves Sony.

Not that I care as I don't see anyone with an HD Tv that does not have HDMI connections at this point.

I don't have an HDTV,so this doesn't matter to me,but will try to get one this holiday season.

rather weird, but HDMI is much better quality and I don't know anyone who uses component cables, merely either a SD cable or the HDMI cable

DRM? What is Kotaku smoking? It's clearly just simplifying hardware. "If you want HD, use the HD port." Didn't the Gamecube remove support for component out or something later in life?

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

AACS Advanced Access Content System is a system for copy protection on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. The system was developed by Intel, Microsoft, Matsushita, Warner Brothers, Sony, IBM, Toshiba and The Walt Disney Company. The system was broken pretty fast on HD-DVD - a key reason why HD-DVD lost the race against Blu-Ray.
All new players sold after December 31, 2010 must limit analog video output of BD content to interlaced standard definition (480i/576i). No player that passes "Decrypted AACS Content" to analog video outputs may be manufactured or sold after December 31, 2013.
So Sony is simply following orders..
(Who uses component cables, anyways, when HDMI is available?)

HDMI cables are cheap nowadays anyway.

aww shit...the hackers will be all over this :p

Wait, I don't even need an hdmi cable for playing in hd already. Why didn't someone tell me this earlier. :P
