Forums - Sony - PSN Pass Program: Sony's Answer to Used Game Sales?!

Thanfully I'm not interested in this game because if I was, I'd be pretty disappointed for not getting to play it. I'm not buying any game that uses online pass and I'm not going to tell you why because it's been discussed countless times before. I just wanted to voice my extremely strong disapproval.

So you're going to intentionally miss out on all future EA, Sony and THQ games just because you refuse to buy the new copy? And it won't be long before all companies have one-time online passes for their games. I wouldn't be shocked if MW3 had the same thing and other big games.

Just buy the new copy son, its what you should do anyways to support the developers.

Why I say at the moment, is I feel this is just their way of slowly implementing a cost system to playing online. Right now, we are given these passes for free with the game. Eventually, I have a feeling we will start getting a "3 month pass" free with the game, and then it will be like $10 for each 3 months you want to play the game. So you are still getting that bonus for buying the game new, but in all reality, they will just be trying to screw us over.

Besides Activision, I really can't see any company being enough of a dick to do that. I think as long as you buy new copies of games, then the devs are happy to make the online free.

If the pass is 10$, I think it's fine.

yep exactly, and I don't think this will kill off used game sales BUT (especially if they price the online pass for a low price) it will make used game sellers to reduce the price of their used games, which could be win-win

But if used game prices go down, new game prices should also go down, because people will get less money for their traded games which will make them more wary of buying them at full price. At least theoretically this should definitely happen, just as new car prices would go down if you couldn't sell them used.

I'm not saying this won't be effective in squeezing more money out of gamers per each game sold, but as for total revenue I don't know...

I agree, in a situation like this at least one side will get the short end of the stick so to speak, and sadly it will end up being the consumer as usual :S but overall as long as the pass is cheap it shouldn't be that big of a problem

By the time I buy a secondhand game (years after release) the online component is probably down anyway..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

well, for me i don't see any problem with it since i don't really play online that much in the first place & to be honest i kinda see the point for why they're doing this coz the money should go to developers not gamestop or whatever.

This is another step in the direction of console game purchases becoming tied to users just like in Steam or other PC services.

Of course, PS3 games are already more expensive than PC games in the first place...

Oh if my PS3 games cost as low as my steam games cost on sales. I won't mind this option but they are wayyy expensive compared to steam sales even when they hit $20 bargain bins.

But yea let us wait and see if this will be implemented in all Sony first party games such as Uncharted, Twisted Metal, etc.

The money from used game sales does go back to the developers (part of it of course). If people couldn't resell / trade-in their games, they wouldn't buy as many games (or they would only buy them after price drops).

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

My only question is what happens if I redeem this code on my PS3 but my friend doesn't have the game and I take it to his house so we can play multiplayer together online. Will I be able to do that with the New copy I bought or will I have to pay the fee for each friends house I play it at? That would stink. :(

Fine by me, I buy my games new anyway. This will probably lead to cheaper used games anyway.

The thing about that is I want to have the decision to support the developers, not be forced to. I never buy games used unless they aren't being sold new anymore, and this policy still ticks me off. If they want to kill off the used market they can go ahead and add incentives for buying the game new, but those incentives should not be unlocking a feature that should have never been locked in the first place. We don't know exactly how sony's pass system is going to work, but I could see it being a big hassle for anyone who likes bringing a game over to play with a friend.
