OTTAWA - Increasing numbers of women are getting radical plastic surgery on their genitals.

In a practise dubbed "cosmetic-gyn," surgeons in the United States and Canada are setting up shop to snip and cut the vulva in order to "beautify" women's vaginas.

The most extreme form is called "The Barbie," where the labia minora are totally cut away, often followed by permanent laser removal of all pubic hair, leaving a featureless, smooth line.

"I had girls as young as 12 in my office requesting surgery," said Dr. Jennifer Blake, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto.

"I find it disturbing, what is being considered normal is to have an insignificant labia minora, which are similar to what you see in prepubescent girls. It's not normal for an adult woman."

"Some of these cosmetic surgery clinics offer mother-daughter specials," Blake adds. "I see women who have had these procedures who present with pain."

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology does not recognize the practice, while the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada is working on a position statement.

The surgery usually costs about $5,000 US and is promoted at the annual Congress on Aesthetic Vaginal Surgery in the U.S., where doctors show graphic before-and-after photos of women's genitals, comparing handiwork. They use the images to sell the procedure on their websites.

"Baby boomers drove the acceptance of these procedures and fuelled the growth of this subspeciality," said Dr. Red Alinsod in a statement on his website. "Women did not want to live with unflattering, sagging, and large labias, nor did they want to live with gaping open vaginas and lack of sensation when having sexual relations."

Concerned physicians are also seeing women who have had other cosmetic alterations that originate in the pornography industry, including anal bleaching and injection of silicone into the G-spot, inside of the anterior wall of the vagina. They warn there are no studies looking into the long term consequences of these surgeries.

I blame Barbie?

Better this than a d*ck.

I don't see what the big deal is. Your life and your body are your last true beacons of freedom, since everything else you do and everywhere else you go are regulated by lawmakers and land-owners.

If you want to give yourself a tattoo or pierce your ears or get circumcised or have your vagina altered to look like a prepubescent girls', that's your decision and nobody has any right to tell you what to do with it. your life, your body, your choice. simple as that.

Yeah, this definitely belongs in NSFW discussion.

I thought NSFW is when you have risk* images/videos?

risque, one. Two, we're still not allowed to post images of that nature (unless you mean risque but not properly pornographic), just topics of that nature in general...

People can do this to their own bodies, but we, Doctors/surgeons, can't do that to others.

It goes against the Hippocratic Oath and the the "primum non nocere"(non-maleficence) principle.

I question the ethics of a surgeon who would do this.

our world's going to shit

Anything about sex or genitals, really. Even without images and videos.

Guys the doc I saw is called "The Perfect Vagina", and I believe there was another but I can't remember the name. I think they show a doctor slicing one up, but I don't recall, I was super blown when I saw it.

Are you serious?  You question the ethics of a cosmetic surgeon who actually does what his patients ask him to?  it's not like it's going to harm them in any significant way, and when we have companies selling cigarettes and the government with almost no problem with anyone owning a gun, THIs is where the ethics draw the line?  I don't know what kind of messed up head you have where it's okay to sell products that kill with wanton recklessness but it's not okay to make a cosmetic change to someone's appearance just becuase you personally think it's wrong.  I think wearing makeup is just wrong....but that doesn't give me the right to tell others that they're not allowed to wear it.
