That's not what I was arguing, accepting a mediocre game for "What it is" doesn't lead to progression. If every accepted the way Final Fantasy XIII is, then what's there to stop Square from making the next title better? Like Final Fantasy XIII isn't a bad game, but I expect a certain level of quality from my Final Fantasy games and compared to what I get from the other titles, this was crap; I payed 60 dollars for a game with 30 dollars worth of content. Just accepting mediocre games will lead to us getting less and less. Bad enough the average length of a game this gen is 5 hours. |
Of course I see your point and I share your point. I want them to deliver the best experiences possible out of every new game they made.
Maybe I am just sensitive about this subject because I gave lots of credit to fans and reviews but then one day I said "I gotta try this for myself, I owe it to the good old times", and you know what? I loved it.

From dev interviews it sounds like they have to some degree.

Nothing's wrong with that, I mean I think this game gets hate for no reason sometimes too. But personally I didn't mind the game being linear, they just made bad design decisions. But ultimately there were 12 games before it that had such fantastic execution, and the game is really bad when compared to them.

I personally use FF XIII as a measure to who has real tastes in games. In other words, respect. Also, you need to post more often in gaming threads |
I know, I know. I've been spending too much time in the off topic section.

Back at the beginning of the gen a lot of people were upset that it was supposed to be an exclusive for PS3 that would have definitely put PS3 over the 360 a long time ago if had been kept exclusive and come out in 2008. Then a lot of PS3 fans got ticked off that it was coming to 360 as well, so all of this this animosity towards this game has colored later impressions of it. |
Are you really that clueless?
Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!
Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

i don't understand why you choose 7 and 8 for examples since they're completely different games compared to each other. the fact of the matter is production and development is short. 2009 in japan but, they have to do localization, and before that development slowed down since it went multiplat as well.

The fundamental difference between FF12 and FF13 is that FF12 is a 200 hour packed game, with so many gameplay options. its obvious the time spent on FF12 was spent on creating a massive gameplay driven RPG. FF13s time was spent capturing and rendering 6 hours of non interactive cutscenes and developing a game engine to run those cutscenes, an engine which has now been said to be obsolete.
well, of course FF is a zombie now. In terms of quality the series proved it wasn't immune to crap when FF8 rolled around with overly complicated mechanics and a poorly told story (though if one goes by the theory that discs 2-4 are Squall dreaming right before he dies from Edea running him through with an ice spear then suddenly it makes sense). Then FF12's production came, costing the company their most talented man (Matsuno) when things started to melt down due to separate halves of the team fighting over direction and executive meddling (like making Vaan the main character LATE in planning stages because Square thought people couldn't relate to a cool, older guy with a chip on his shoulder like Basch).
I know the series will continue selling, I'm not stupid, but in terms of quality both on the story and gameplay fronts the series is dead. You'll never get a truly great FF ever again, not the way Square is now
