Mediocrity is relative, we all know that. Square Enix is free to do what they want with their OP and the public is free to react to that the way they feel. Keep in mind that audiences are complex "entities" and though lots of fans disliked the game, many other loved it. As far as I know the game didn't sell bad at all, regardless of bad critics and fanboys whining like babies. But pretending Final Fantasy series not to try new things is something weird.
The game failed to reach universal claim and I think that's something that won't happen ever again to a Final Fantasy game. Expectations are ridiculously high each and every time and people love to bash old glories as much as adolescents love pointing out their parents flaws. It makes them feel they are somehow more important.

That's not what I was arguing, accepting a mediocre game for "What it is" doesn't lead to progression.  If every accepted the way Final Fantasy XIII is, then what's there to stop Square from making the next title better?  Like Final Fantasy XIII isn't a bad game, but I expect a certain level of quality from my Final Fantasy games and compared to what I get from the other titles, this was crap; I payed 60 dollars for a game with 30 dollars worth of content.  Just accepting mediocre games will lead to us getting less and less.  Bad enough the average length of a game this gen is 5 hours.

Of course I see your point and I share your point. I want them to deliver the best experiences possible out of every new game they made.
Maybe I am just sensitive about this subject because I gave lots of credit to fans and reviews but then one day I said "I gotta try this for myself, I owe it to the good old times", and you know what? I loved it.

Nothing's wrong with that, I mean I think this game gets hate for no reason sometimes too.  But personally I didn't mind the game being linear, they just made bad design decisions.  But ultimately there were 12 games before it that had such fantastic execution, and the game is really bad when compared to them.
