the download speeds you see are 550 kilobytes
8bits make a byte 5mbits = 5000 kbits/8 = 625kilobytes aka ur data download speed |
Thank you and that other guy for explaining it to me. For a second i thought my dad was spending $40 a month for garbage. I could always watch netflix and hd videos on youtube just fine so that always made me suspicious.

This is actually very suprising to me since NOTHING I ever download goes above 550 kbps. |
That's roughly what 5 megabits/s is...

I don't understand how some people have such damned fast internet. There is nothing even remotely close to that anywhere around here.

The internet from my dorm is linked to a university network. The higher speeds are needed for the education, so the dorms surrounding this institution take advantage of the infrastructure placed. But speeds are relatively fast here in Scandinavia. In Spain I only have 5mb for 30 euros, it's hard to go back to slower speeds.

Well, our university doesn't have near those speeds, unless they don't let us access them. Ours has like 6-15 mbps depending on the day.

Damn you all T_T
lol.
EDIT: The worst part is that my speed is actually faster than 84% of other people's speeds here :S
Well... at least it's not as bad as their speed
How are some of you living with your speeds?!?! This isn't 1999 anymore... Anything less than 15-20 MBps would be absolutely unacceptable almost anywhere. I pay 35$ (US dollars) for my 30MBps speed with around a ping of 15-18ms and 0% time out rate at all times and can download a full length movie (800 MB) in roughly 2-5 minutes. I assumed that in today's day and age that was pretty much the norm, and anything less would be unacceptable. This is 2011, after all. I know my speed is acceptable at 30MBps but some of your speeds far exceed mine, and that is awesome. Although what about the people below 10? or even below 5MBps? Ouch...

While my 1 mbps internet right now is a little slow, the 5-8 (I've seen as high as 15 or 16) mbps internet that my college I am staying at next year has is more than enough. You have to realize that a lot of areas don't have access to super fast internet. Our internet is literally the ONLY fast internet provided in this area, and that only came around about 5 years ago (Only option before that was dial up).
