Forums - PC - Question about internet speeds...

What gets me with ISP's is "Fair Use Policy" whereby if you actually use what you pay for you get punished :| that really pissed me off when I first went to Virgin Media but it seems to have become almost non-existant after the first year or so.

This is mine

Mind you my cousin is currently playing Age of Empires Online, not that it is hugely intesive by any means though.

I can't wait until the upgrade happens though.

Mine is usually above 30 mb/s .. but today tested around 26. Not bad, paying $35.00 a month. My best friend has AT&T and gets around 3 mb/s and is paying around the same as me. He comes over to my house almost on a daily basis and brings his laptop to play games because he said it makes him sick how slow his internet is. I can watch Netflix in my bedroom, be gaming Online on my PS3, downloading a movie on my computer, and have pretty much no lag at all on any of them. Definitely happy with my internet. Yours isn't too bad either, as long as you are actually getting 10mb/s. A lot of ISPs say 'UP TO' a certain speed, you are rarely actually getting that speed. i.e. my internet is 35 mb/s and usually I ring in around 25 mb/s to 34 mb/s.

Theoratically my max speed is 20Mbps although in practice it's not that fast due to me living in Australia and most servers being hosted far away. Also while my download speed is good my upload is capped at a much slower speed.

Weird mine says "up to 12mb/s yet I average 16-20mb/s

This is actually very suprising to me since NOTHING I ever download goes above 550 kbps.

I'm pretty sure the 5.05 Mb/s is megaBITS per second, and the 550 kbps is kiloBYTES per second.  550 Kilobytes transfers to 4.4 Megabits per second.

------------

My internet is usually like .9-1.0 Mb/s and it is perfectly fine unless I want to download a bunch of stuff.

internet speeds are measured in bits not bytes

the download speeds you see are 550 kilobytes

8bits make a byte

5mbits = 5000 kbits/8 = 625kilobytes aka ur data download speed

i have 14mb/s but its useless nothing ever downloads that fast anyway cause the sites never have enough servers
