Forums - General - Men of VGC: Can you cook?

No. My cooking at school has led to 2 small fires, charcoal cookies, cutting half my finger off, making my mom throw up and other sick and twisted creatures that emerge from the oven. I haven't taken cooking as a GCSE :P

Of course.

Any real man can feed his family, which includes hunting (earn money, go food shopping) and roasting the game over a fire (cooking).

Baking though is for the girls.
However, ovens are for big pieces of meat, not wheat mixed with sugar.

My dad has taught me how to make a number of dishes over the years. I must say the best thing I know how to make is fish, it being my favorite food!

That's funny you posted this. I was looking into buying some decent knives earlier this year and I looked at some of the Globals as well as a bunch of other Japanese steel. Then I realized that I don't have a good cutting board so after looking into that, I decided I wanted to make one. THEN I realized that I don't have the tools to do it so the whole idea got put on the shelf.

Sharp knives are less likely to cause you to cut yourself since they don't slip off whatever you're cutting.

Doesn't have to be over $100 each though :)

It's a lot of fun when the knives are sharp, too. You can cut stuff with much ease.

Yeah well I did eventually buy a cheapo cutting board and a couple of relatively cheap knives because what I initially owned was atrochious. I was extremely impressed with how well the knives cut through. Te feel of it was so drastic that it didn't seem like I was cutting the same meats, all this from a minor upgrade. I will eventually make a bigger jump in quality, probably when I can invest more time to cooking as a whole.

IMO. Unless you're a chef or some specialists requiring various kitchen knives, you only really need 3 knives.

1. Chef/Santoku knife

2. Utility knife

3. Paring knife

Meat cleaver would make a good 4th for chopping bones and manual mincing.

Buying a full knives set is pretty useless for majority of people.

I agree. I got 2 Santokus 6"&8" came in a set, a 7" utility and a 4" paring.  It is indeed all I need but I eventually wanna upgrade the quality of the steel is all. Actually, even though I don't "need" it, I wouldn't mind a 10" slicer for roasts.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Yeah. Specialized knives are great when the opportunity presented.

I can cook, and enjoy experimenting. I have a few recipes my grandmothers gave me, mainly dishes i loved as a kid. and then cookbooks ive picked up that looked neat. I generally dont cook that often right now due to my work load but try to cook at least twice a week. I love cooking in cast iron, the smells for the seasoning are great.

its fun to mess with recipes, sure you may get something bad, and end up throwing it out, but the variation allows you to hone in on what you really like.

I steam, broil, bake, saute. (i can not grill where i live right now)

my strong suites are pastas with home made sauces, big fan of pesto's and using sun dried tomato's.

my weakest suite that ive tried is korean... i could not eat it, did not taste anything like what i was expecting, and the rice noodles were all wrong.

I also for the life of me can never get eggs to boil right... ive lost at least 2 dozen eggs trying to figure out the right way to get that done and not make a mess.

blackened steak with Gorgonzola and a lemon herb sauce is amazing

love fresh asparagus (I steam or saute in real butter )& garlic potatos
