That's funny you posted this. I was looking into buying some decent knives earlier this year and I looked at some of the Globals as well as a bunch of other Japanese steel. Then I realized that I don't have a good cutting board so after looking into that, I decided I wanted to make one. THEN I realized that I don't have the tools to do it so the whole idea got put on the shelf.

Sharp knives are less likely to cause you to cut yourself since they don't slip off whatever you're cutting.
Doesn't have to be over $100 each though :)
It's a lot of fun when the knives are sharp, too. You can cut stuff with much ease.

Yeah well I did eventually buy a cheapo cutting board and a couple of relatively cheap knives because what I initially owned was atrochious. I was extremely impressed with how well the knives cut through. Te feel of it was so drastic that it didn't seem like I was cutting the same meats, all this from a minor upgrade. I will eventually make a bigger jump in quality, probably when I can invest more time to cooking as a whole.

IMO. Unless you're a chef or some specialists requiring various kitchen knives, you only really need 3 knives.
1. Chef/Santoku knife
2. Utility knife
3. Paring knife
Meat cleaver would make a good 4th for chopping bones and manual mincing.
Buying a full knives set is pretty useless for majority of people.

I agree. I got 2 Santokus 6"&8" came in a set, a 7" utility and a 4" paring. It is indeed all I need but I eventually wanna upgrade the quality of the steel is all. Actually, even though I don't "need" it, I wouldn't mind a 10" slicer for roasts.
