Forums - Nintendo - Kotaku hands-on with Ghost Recon Online for Wii U

http://kotaku.com/5813047/hands+on-with-the-wii-us-first-third+person-shooter

Ghost Recon Online for the Wii U is a third-person shooter for Nintendo's next big thing packed with tons of cool bells and whistles. It also demonstrates some of the big hurdles the new console will face when trying to satisfy hardcore gamers.

I'm a long-time shooter fan, so I was very excited for a chance to get my hands on Ubisoft's shooter for the Wii U.

The early experience, customizing my weapons, controlling a remote drone and seeing the video feed on the controller, were all very impressive. But the thumbsticks, designed to be more like what you'd find on a 3DS than a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller, didn't seem to be able to deliver the same sort of experience I've come to expect from my console shooters.

I'm sure a bit of tweaking to the settings would have solved some of the issues, and the developers say they still have work to do on their end before the 2012 release, but what bothered me the most was how flat those sticks feel. Unlike with the thumbsticks on a PS3 or 360, you're sliding around two buttons on a flat platform. I might get used to it, but for now I'm much more comfortable tilting miniature joysticks under my thumbs.

Seems it might not be as satisfactory for shooters as the PS360 controllers, but I think it's too early to call now. It does seem like the game was too early in development to start judging Wii U based on it.

I don't know how I feel about having the analogs above the buttons, either.

Wouldn't be a bad idea for them to replace 3DS-style pads with sticks like the Nunchuk or Classic Controller has.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

well not sure how i feel about the analog sticks or whatever you want to call the things.

persronally i like the one on the 3ds, so maybe i'll like them on this. never got why analog sticks stuck out so much in first place.

and they're very close to the surface of the controller, so accidentally pressing a button while moving is going to be a common thing.

also not having clickable thumbsticks can be limiting for shooters

i hope this isn't final, it has a great idea, but its not done the right way it seems.

I would like to try those sticks. Probably I get used, like the first time played with a N64 controller...good memories.

as in holding it kinda way? , well the controller has a good grip on it actually, a bit like a bigger PSP phat, and there is some bumps on the back of it so that you don't cramps while holding it.

but if you mean awkward controls , then i might agree with that....

controls mainly. and it will depend on the genre of the games too i suppose. I can see RPGs and Strategy/puzzle game working well with this but anything with shooting might be very awkward. too soon to tell for sure tho I suppose
