In the article he mentions the patents involved. Sounds like Nintendo is being cheap as always.

It's a total shame. A missed opportunity. If Nintendo is going to fully sell people on the console to controller screen streaming, this would have been a super cool gimmick to add to the whole premise. The ability to stream your DVD movies to the control screen on the moments that (as Nintendo themselves demonstrated) someone in your family wants to do/see something else.
Nintendo, always finding a way to gimp their own innovative ideas.

They aren't doing it to be cheap. They are doing it because everyone on earth by now has a standalone DVD/Blu-Ray player. Why put somthing into your console that nobody will use? Nintendo initially planned to put a DVD player into the Wii, but decided against it for the same reason, saturation. How is that cheap?

Oh I forgot, they have to pay royalties to Sony. Why fund your biggest competitor?

Not "everyone on earth" has a standalone DVD/Blu-Ray player. I don't. I personally like my entertainment center simple and uncluttered. You can buy a standalone DVD player at Walmart for $25. Nintendo's total cost for this implementation would probably be around $3-$5 per console due to mass production etc...   Sure it won't be a deal braker but it sure sounds cheapish on Nintendo's part considering it would cost them next to nothing IMO. And I reiterate it is a missed opportunity with their new controller.

I already have a PS3, and many computers.

Couldn't care less, I've never used a game console to play video and I don't even own a DVD or Bluray player.

Once you hook your P.C. to your widescreen theres no need for external media players.

Can't really say I care.

Besides, everyone should have expected this. Nintendo is not trying to push blu-ray like Sony is. Nor are they really trying to compete with multi-media features against Sony like MS is.

They have little reason to want to add that support. Blu-ray playback will be one of the least important features for consoles next gen.

If 3DTVgains popularity your assumption could end up being way off.

Blurays won't be as expensive, not to mention you can grab one for $1.50 at Redbox right now.

Netflix doesn't stream 3D nor is it's HD the same overall quality as that found on a BD disc.

I am sure BD will continue to have its uses within the next 3-5 years easy.

3DTV isn't going to gain popularity though... not unless it gets rid of the glasses.... and even then... it might not take off since 3D actually has a lot of presentation negatives due to it basically screwing up how movies should be directed.

3D seems to be less of a selling feature than HD has been in general, and HDTV never really caught on until people could buy 40+ inch flat screen TVs for $1000 or less that just happened to be HD. Unless there is some other improvement that 3D can piggyback on, I doubt even glasses-free 3DTV will really inspire many people to replace perfectly good large screen flat pannel HDTVs simply to get 3D.

Yeah more or less... I mean heck, look at how slow blu-ray adoption is happening even with HD TV sales being huge... like Blu-ray it's only going to definitly "win" if the issue is forced.

Which for 3D Tv it will not.   Well not until it's without glasses... and even then, I question it... Even full holographic TV has issues that i think would stop wholesale adoption.

I mean, imagine a horror movie whose expierene totally changes depending on where in the room your are.

Sports and Pron would sell 17 billion holographic tvs in the first 6 nanseconds after release.

interesting that Netflix doesn't steam 3D though.

I have somewhat assumed that the Wii U controller will be capable of displaying glassless 3D as long as the console is not displaying anything on the tv screen. (you know, render both screens to the Umote to create the 3DS effect...)

but with no ability to stream 3D movies maybe not after all.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?

You are the same guy that made one of the first posts in this thread, correct?

I was hoping that with Nintendo's push to more media experiences via online that they would include a bluray player. However, I always knew there was a significant chance there would be no video playback via disc.

Guess they'll stick to netflix and other internet based solutions to avoid the added licensing costs.

Not a big issue as it just forces me to keep my PS3 around for movies... unless I sale it and simply buy a basic bluray player.

I'll have to wait to see how WiiU's online stacks up... especially its browser. I want it to be updated far more frequently as I like to hunt for videos and right now I'm forced to use PS3 for that as its crappy browser is still far more useful than Wii's.

I don't really need any optical disc playback in a console, it would be better if it was DLNA compliant.

Missed opportunity, they need to move towards more media capabilities not less.
