If Nintendo is going to fully sell people on the console to controller screen streaming, this would have been a super cool gimmick to add to the whole premise. The ability to stream your DVD movies to the control screen on the moments that (as Nintendo themselves demonstrated) someone in your family wants to do/see something else. Nintendo, always finding a way to gimp their own innovative ideas. |
They aren't doing it to be cheap. They are doing it because everyone on earth by now has a standalone DVD/Blu-Ray player. Why put somthing into your console that nobody will use? Nintendo initially planned to put a DVD player into the Wii, but decided against it for the same reason, saturation. How is that cheap?
Oh I forgot, they have to pay royalties to Sony. Why fund your biggest competitor?

Not "everyone on earth" has a standalone DVD/Blu-Ray player. I don't. I personally like my entertainment center simple and uncluttered. You can buy a standalone DVD player at Walmart for $25. Nintendo's total cost for this implementation would probably be around $3-$5 per console due to mass production etc... Sure it won't be a deal braker but it sure sounds cheapish on Nintendo's part considering it would cost them next to nothing IMO. And I reiterate it is a missed opportunity with their new controller.
