Forums - Microsoft - Halo 4 Engine 'Isn't 100 Per Cent New' - Microsoft

aww man this sucks i was wishing they don't use the reach multiplayer or sp for the matter as the perks they have just doesn't feel halo to me. i don't want all the perks i want halo 3 like multiplayer back with imrpovements better graphics more weapons. I know alot of people and i mean alot of people that like halo 3 multiplayer over reach but play reach cause 3 is old and that is what is being played.

I agree with seece, since Halo 5/6 are most likely gonna be Xbox 720 (Halo 5 could be a potential 2014 holiday title) games yeah this is a wise move...focus on making the new engine for that console instead of making a new one from the ground up for 360 just for one Halo game.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Reach has a great engine, good enough to be fun , so thats all that matters.

waiting to see gameplay.

Halo Reach was an impressive engine?

From a technical point of view, yea it definitely was. Tons of effects/particles, tons of decent to smart AI (friendly and adversarial), tons of physics (grenades, rockets, vehicles, bullets), a large playing arena, and lots of sound sources all at once with minimal hitch. The only problem I had with it is how during certain moments different things had a large variation in detail. For example, at the start of "Tip of the Spear" (I think that was what it was called) where you're riding in with a few dozen warthogs and the banshees attack... the warthogs looked great, the dust trails behind them looked great, the sky looked great, the character models looked great... and then the biggest thing in view, the ground, looked quite poor. I like to call it GT5 syndrome, where things of varying quality are thrown together and it looks like a mess despite some things being unbelievably well detailed.

Yes the details were nice but they also got touch of grey that I really dislike and that is something you notice the best if you play a lot on community maps...Forge world is impressive but I really dislike the visuals compared to Halo 3..  And with the Halo reach engine Bungie promised us epic huge battles and in my opinion they hardly succeed...Sure like you said their are epic battles going on in the background but if we talk about Epic huge battles then Halo 3 did it better...The moment when you reach the Ark (I guess it is that mission) and have to fight two scarabs and their are dozens of Ghosts/banshees who are trying to give you a hard time;.Well that was epic..

Reach is quite underrated visually so if they can take that and improve it, it will be amazing.

Not many games on the 360 look good when I blow them up on my 1080p projector and 92 inch screen. Like Crysis 2 even looks quite bad and pixelated on the 360. Alan wake looks terrible...

But Halo Reach actually looks respectable when you consider all it is rendering and the draw distances at hand...

I just played the reach demo, pretty colors but pretty basic stuff on screen compared to current games. It does look nice and clean though.

I play on the same setup, have you tried setting the 360 to 720p output? I've found that that increased the sharpness of the graphics considerably for Alan Wake. My projector has a much better upscaler then the 360. Even the dashboard looks better with 720p output instead of 1080p. (I have an old fat 360 one of the first with hdmi, maybe the upscaler in the old model just sucks)

Yeah I think the cleanness helps Halo a lot when put under microscope. I did have it at 720p for a but not with the projector setup. I'll try that again. What projector do you have btw? I'm rocking a BenQ plus 1000 as well as Acer h5360 for 3D vision gaming but that one is 720p.

A tweaked Reach engine would be more than enough, Halo Reach was a gorgeous game.

Panasonic pt-ae1000u. I'm getting near the end of the life of my 2nd bulb. Maybe I'll buy a new 3D one instead of another lamp, I haven't found a good 1080p one yet.

It could be my old 360 anyway, I tried some 1080p test patterns and they don't come out right on 360. The hair comb patterns look fine on the ps3 but on 360 it looks like the picture is downscaled then upressed again.

Hopefully they can get at least another 30-40% out of the Reach engine.

They're describing it similar to how Bungie described upgrading the engine from 3/ODST to Reach so lets hope its a technical jump on the same level as it was from 3/ODST to Reach as it is from Reach to Halo 4 i.e. massive :D
