i actually believe this, i know there not at the top when it comes to exclusives but if you look at this christmas, there gonna have all three of there biggest core franchises: gears, forza and halo all releasing at once, they'll also have all the kinect stuff they just announced to get the causal gamers in, and that whole dashboard redesign and stuff and i think they actually think they have a good chance of being sales number 1



End of 2012 prediction:

xbox 360 : 73-75 million  playstation 3 : 72-74 million  wii : 104-105 million 

Most hyped for :

Bioshock: infinte, The Last Of Us, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and Agent

One might argue that anyone who cares about any of that probably already owns a 360 and they have little to draw new people in who weren't already interested

That's because they shipped a lot during the holidays. Kinect had just launched.

Outselling PS3 by 600,000 is something they did during the holidays, not in the 1st quarter. The gap is still 3.4 million.

PS3 as it stands now has a huge advantage. Its selling more than 360 and will continue to do so.

Huh??  Microsoft already outsold sony over Christmas and the first 3 months of the year.  XBOX is increasing its lead worldwide as we speak.

KINECT > than sony's exclusives. 

Nintendo has shown this generation that casual gamers are the key to HUGE SALES!!!

Kinect is so big it has its own gravitational pull, and all the casuals will be sucked it....mark my words.

Um where are you getting your info? PS3 has sold more this year and is selling more every week despite kinect and even in the quater wehere kinect sold 10 mil 360 only tied ps3 in consoles sold, Kinect has helped 360 stay afloat but it's not gonna last much longer mark MY words

I think the FREE xbox with PC promo is hard for VGCHARTZ to track and will result in  BIG SALES!!

Xbox 360 Extends Lead Over PS3

Now that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have all released their financial results for the quarter to March 31st 2011 we can take an updated look at the worldwide console sales situation.  If you have read our reports of those financial results you will have some idea of how the console wars are going but some of this should still be of interest.

This generation certainly has not played out how we expected.

Sony have made their own missteps with the PS3 which is likely to struggle to reach the sales of the original PlayStation, let alone the PS2.  Microsoft’s rush to market with the Xbox 360, despite the reliability problems that hurried development seems to have caused initially, has broken Sony’s home console dominance.

It has looked like the PS3 was getting ready to overtake the 360 in sales as it hit its stride, however over the last two quarters the Kinect-powered reinvigoration of the 360′s sales has see it first halt and then reverse that trend.

I doubt it, they've never said it before. Given Nintendo only expect to ship 13 mill, they can easily beat them, if they aggressively cut they can compete with Sony as well. It's not as difficult as it sounds.

The situation is very simple. Sony shipped too much in the holiday season and MS had shortages, that's why MS managed to ship more in Q1 2011 than Sony, although the PS3 is still outselling it. That's (IMO) the most likely explanation.

Anyway, thinking about it again, the 360 could be first this year if its' lead is big enough in Americas. The 360 is lost in Japan, and it doesn't have a chance against the PS3 in continental Europe (the markets where only the PS3 is available do NOT matter here as they are mostly in MiddleEast/Africa/Asia). Its' only chances are America and UK, and considering that the USA is the biggest single market in the world it's a very good chance.

But we'll see. For now, I think it will be close between the PS3 and 360.

Microsoft just announced  55 million before e3.  Like i said i believe vgchartz is having problems tracking xbox and the kinect effect ...especially in the middle east where kinect is big!Don't think there are 1.3 million xboxs on shelves or in channel.  Only logical reason would be if they announced a price cut but that didn't happen

it has a good chance if the price drops for both kinect and the 360, but both need to happen for the 360 to beat both sony(ps3) and nintendo(wii) this year. with the wii at $149.99 and rumored to drop again this fall, the 360 needs kinect to start selling like crazing again this fall and since it seems that kinect's software drought is coming to a end, i for see its sales to rise alot and soon. also the star wars kinect game could sell quite a few systems to the hardcore star wars fans out there. it will be interesting too see what actually happens throughout the year. :)

So you are bragging because MS shipped a little more then Sony after Sony had to deal with the disaster in japan and take psn down for a month? Barring another major issue for Sony to deal with there is no way 360 is going to outsell the ps3 their year not eafter that horrible E3 MS had and again even in Kinects best selling time ps3 still tied 360 sales and kinect is looking weaker then ever now with every game being on rails
