Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, home of Xbox, made a bold prediction at the company’s E3 media briefing on Monday in Los Angeles.

"Combine all that we offer with great partners and a growing audience, and Xbox is poised to register another record year,” said Mattrick. “This year, Xbox 360 will go from being the number one selling console in North America to the number one selling console globally."

That means the company – which recently reported 55 million in global Xbox 360 sales – expects to outsell both rivals Nintendo Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3 during the year. Sony recently said it expects to sell 15 million PS3s during the company's fiscal year, ending March 2012.

Microsoft has been eager to tout Xbox 360’s growth, an unusual trend considering the console’s age – it launched back in 2005, before the Wii and PS3. The recent launch of the gesture- and voice-sensing Kinect helped boost sales, along with a redesign and new entertainment features for the console.

Mattrick made a similarly bold statement at E3 2008, when he claimed Xbox 360 would outsell PS3 during this console generation.

If this years sales are any indication their confidence will be vindicated.  Microsoft has weathered pretty much anything and everything their competitors have thrown at them and they are still on top.  Microsoft is outshipping sony and nintendo as we speak.

With the HUGE game line-up of the World's Fastesest SellingElectronic Device (Kinect), and the inevitable price drop...Microsoft will indeed rule the world in sales!! 

iNTERESTING FACTOID:  Microsoft has proven that a game company doesn't need to sell in Japan to be number one in the world.

Not gonna happen, MS has an incredibly weak line up their E3 was sad, Sony would match any price cut, and I don't see Kinect sales picking up again now that the hope of some incredible software is dead

Huh??  Microsoft already outsold sony over Christmas and the first 3 months of the year.  XBOX is increasing its lead worldwide as we speak.

KINECT > than sony's exclusives. 

Nintendo has shown this generation that casual gamers are the key to HUGE SALES!!!

Kinect is so big it has its own gravitational pull, and all the casuals will be sucked in....mark my words.

I am still waiting for Project Milo.

They will EASILY sell more than 15 million especially if the kinect bundle hits 225$ or $199.

What does that have to do with Microsoft outshipping the ps3 by 600,000 and nintendo by 1.3 million the 1st 3 months of the year??

Um where are you getting your info? PS3 has sold more this year and is selling more every week despite kinect and even in the quater wehere kinect sold 10 mil 360 only tied ps3 in consoles sold, Kinect has helped 360 stay afloat but it's not gonna last much longer mark MY words
