I don't think people need portable controler to play the game while being in toilette ;) Since it's Japan we are speaking about we can safely assume that most of them will have protable anyway (as they probably spend more time in trains than at home).

So what about your kid who wants to take a portable to his room? Or you want to game in your bed?
It's all just guesswork because we know so little about Café, but I think it might be something Nintendo is after.

Considering i didn't feel such needs in the last 21 years of my gaming career I'd say it will be niche at best ;)
And actually I'm one of few who own Blazblue PS3, PSP and tried playing it while streaming from PS3 to PSP - trust me it sucked due to lag.

That's not exactly a lot of data you're going from there.
And just because the PS3/PSP streaming isn't optimal doesn't mean technology hasn't advanced. The PSP is what, 6 or 7 years old now?
I would've figured that was obvious. What you're seeing is them trying to muscle Sony out of the Japanese market altogether by creating a console my convenient to the Japanese lifestyle that will also get those 3rd party games PS3 has been taking away, and a handheld which eats into the base of games PSP has had (though Monster Hunter will be the make-or-break player there)

But isn't that way too much to be handled by a controller? And why would they try to compete with the 3DS on that point?
Good streaming technology that allows for play with little lag needs you to be close to the point you're recieving from, so if they are going to be streaming games, the gameplay quality should be hurt noticably if they try to stream to you no matter where you are. That's not going to drive Monster Hunter playing PSP owners anywhere, not to mention Monster Hunter going to the NGP (depending on the 3DS not recieving its own game of course).

I'm talking about their strategy as a whole. "And a handheld" is referring to the 3DS, i'm saying if Cafe is as you speculate, the whole strategy is made to make Sony obsolete in Japan (now a more "portable" console might not help as much in the West, but there's only a day left before we can speak with more certainty on the subject, and such an initiative could fail either way)

Then it makes more sense.
If I'm following then, you're saying the 3DS is a high end handheld that will take on the NGP whereas the Café is trying to muscle out both the PS3 and the PSP?
I can't see Nintendo succeeding right now, but that should be much clearer when they've presented Café tomorrow.
Well I am still a critic of the belief that the controller will be a classic style controller with a built in screen. I just don't see that controller selling tons and it would be a reversal from Nintendo's motion controls. I will buy it none the less as I know Nintendo can pull anything off if they put in effort. But honestly I don't see the average consumer buying such a device.
I guess I'll have to see what the controller looks like tomorow. If it is truly a classic controller with a screen then I will be inclined to predict dismal sales for Nintendo. Wii and DS success could be out of Nintendo's reach with Cafe and 3DS. But I have faith that Nintendo will always create great games for gamers. I may not understand all of Nintendo's moves but I have never been let down by them to date.
As for portability, I think the controller will probably require the home console to function. Unless Nintendo looses money on each controller or prices them radiculously. If they are a true handheld I would find that to be awsome. A new GameBoy that connects to your home console. However playing on GameCube with my GBA I'm not to sure what Nintendo could do to capitalize on its functionality.
I can't wait to see Nintendo's console this morning!
