Dear Ioi,

I'd start by caring more about users.
I once had a member insulting me in the forum and before getting into an argument since I liked the site and didn't want to end banned with him, I decided to report through a PM to you. Not only that member was never even called the attention but you simply didn't answer to my two messages.
On the one hand I do appreciate the effort and vision put into this, and after 11 years doing successful website based businesses I believe I could give you my two cents on how to evolve this site. Still I wonder why should I help a guy that's arrogant enough not to answer to 2 PMs.

At some point I would have considered even offering to invest money in this site, had the opportunity arisen, but after seeing you don't answer to email I thought I wouldn't waste my time (nor my money) on a most probably random, rude, or simply non-existant reply.

I know that you have some very fanatic supporters and I'll be just getting some hate for this, but I think I can cope with it. In the meantime I keep on enjoying what's good of this site and I guess I'll someday click on one of those adsense ads so you get something in return.

Besides, overall, IMNSHO your ideas sound quite right. Let's see if execution make them justice.
Still I think you might be missing a big opportunity to make this a really good business. Specially considering general interest in sales will most probably go sharply down as this console gen advances and makers start consolidating their final position.

In the almost impossible case that a technical issue didn't allow you to read my PMs and the behaviour reported is something you have never ever been guilty of, then I'd take back my criticism.

In any case I wish you good luck in this next step for vgchartz, I think it is a very good initiative with a lot of well focused effort put into it and it deserves growing.

Best regards

Well VGchartz is being used by more sites in its news so word is getting out, maybe VGC should issue more PR releases on the data, like when companies fail to meet their goals

That would be great, but I'm pretty sure lots of companies don't release their sales targets to the public.

Just kiss the tip.

I can understand your frustration, but is it really ioi's job to go trailing round banning people? The running of the site is a big task to undertake, which is why there are other moderators for that kind of thing; I highly doubt ioi would be making a topic such as this and taking great interest in improving the website if he didnt care about the users or their opinions.

ON TOPIC: I like the majority of the suggestions so far; especially an earlier suggestion about monitoring game ratings because its ridiculous that games that arent even released are voted upon. I suppose as people have suggested, implementing user reviews would remove this so Im all for them.

Kudos points seems like a great idea but if its going to be used alot of monitoring is gonna be necessary otherwise the system will get abused which is clearly not what anyone wants.

An improved site design would be nice, but nothing major; touch up seems sufficient.

Hmmmm... some interesting points here.

It seems a lot of users are against the idea of site reviews, but would prefer we adopt / partner with / mimic a gamerankings style system. This sort of thing is certainly possible, and is something we could do. Would have to be heavily user-driven though, and only "trusted" users.

Personally I like the idea of users having a status, kudos, points or whatever. Based partly on number of posts but maybe also voted by other forum members. This way we can control who has access to edit and add certain features to the site - another form of self-moderation really. The more "kudos" or whatever points that a user accumulates the more freedom they have to do things on the site.

Overall I am getting the feeling that I had originally. That vgchartz in itself should avoid getting too wrapped up in becoming more like general gaming sites. What we should try to be is a complete database of games with game info, their sales figures and so on. Which we are already there in essence, just need some fine tuning.

Here's a list of things I want to do then, let's see if most agree:

- A general site makeover, more web 2.0 stuff, reorder front page slightly.

- A distinction between "news" and "sales articles". Sales articles are original vgchartz content written by people like thesource / y-koron and offer more in-depth analysis of the data, normally on a weekly basis. The news section could either be tested as a digg-style section where "trusted" users can add stories which get voted up if they are liked, we could form a partnership with other sites to share news info or we could set up a small, dedicated team to write some more general gaming news items, attend game shows etc.

- More charting and graphing options - as somebody said this is essentially some database queries as the data is all there so it can be as imaginative as I / we want it to be. I'll maybe create a thread of "I would like..." for this.

- A "kudos" / "trust" or similar system for the forum / community whereby users gain points based on number of posts, votes from other users, number of temp bans and so on. Gives other users an idea of how to trust others and gives mods an indication of previous behaviour if a dispute arises.

- Expansion of the game pages. Reintroduction of user-created reviews and faqs, maybe promotion of this feature more on the homepage to drum up some more interest. Aim to make vgchartz a complete database of all games ever released with their sales figures in each region, some key info for each, screenshots etc.

- A release date section / upcoming releases.

- Improvements to the "social network" side of the site. Full implementation of "I own this game" - more options to customise profiles, info about friend's recent activity (a la facebook) - which games they have recently bought etc - ability to form groups? Events? Lots of potential here - could be the first social network site dedicated to gamers.

- Finally, a better and more integrated prediction "game". I like the idea of everybody starting with a sum of money and being able to bet however much they want on certain predictions. This would add more depth to the whole "game", and would be less restrictive and take less admin than the current system. So each week for each game the user can make a prediction as to how much it will sell in a particular region in the following week. If enough users participate we can produce weekly top 50s or whatever (predicted) and these can be compared to actuals when they are available. This would encourage users to visit the game pages more, use the comparison tools more, wouldn't limit you to having to predict 10 games each week and could be fully automated.

I think by going down these routes, we manage to offer enough for you guys to hopefully want to stay here and not leave, whilst keeping the site unique and simple and concentrating on what is most important to us all - the sales figures.

I agree whole-heartedly with everything on there, but the bold areas are of particular interest. I think that these two features would actually make the site explode with new members. Integrate those two for sure if you do anything.

Just kiss the tip.

What VGChartz means to me:

Intelligent discussion based on the most important aspect of any console war, sales, and how it influences trends in the industry, especially during these landmark transitions.

A gaming community that I can go without worrying about sifting through mounds of biased trolling posts or mindless "list" topics.

A place where I can see the absolute influence of gaming product without the guesses.  Seeing what works and what does not in what regions and put an end to all the media spin.  These are the results.  The bottom line, and without seeing that, there is no way to tell for sure what is going on in any other segment of the industry.

No thoughts about my comments ioi .....

Oh well. Keep up the good work!

Ioi,

Fair enough. You do have 2 PM of mine, but they are much older than November, from the 16th and 18th of June to be precise. Your reply shows you are not the arrogant guy I feared.

About the site, I see two lines of business:

1. The site as it is, a site for people like myself that like videogames and numbers from which you have to live on traffic: The important thing that many pointed out in one form or another is to keep this site DATA centric. Everything data centric will fit. Metacritic model is the way to go for the reviews. A game database ala IMDB too. A forecasting game like HSX too. Network? bah... I don't like how networking is getting everywhere as if it were the holy grail of websites. If done carefully and in a second level, fine. But I'd never try to convert VGChartz into another "me too" network centric site. As I said i think your intuition is quite on track for it.

2. The data collection and PROJECTION: You and a few very involved guys in this site are learning to be quite good crunching numbers and related data, and differently from professional data crunchers all of you like the gaming industry which is an advantage when it comes to "smelling" what's to come (fanboyism aside, of course). I worked as a Territory Manager for Gartner/Dataquest, and from what I know from inside the biggest service in statistics and projections of the IT industry, you guys are nearer to good, "sellable" data than you believe (and I know you believe it a lot already). And a few companies are very willing to pay for that data. Specially for projections. There it is the opportunity. You can break the business model NPD is abusing. Somehow you already started doing it... That's what I like best of this site. If you are interested in how this idea could be implemented I can go into further detail in a PM. I promise I'll answer

cheers,
