Forums - Nintendo - Explosion of the mind: Nintendo and High Fidelity Graphics a first w/ Cafe

The worst Mario ever was the human one in that utterly crappy movie. So a HD Mario could come close to the bottom. Mario is best in 2D and low res!!!

"the Cafe will be the first time we see Nintendo, as a developer, make games with high fidelity graphics"

As thekitchensink pointed out, you really need to look at Nintendo's history.

And graphical fidelity is a shallow reason to get exicted about a game. As in it's caring about the games based on their appearance without taking artistry or content into account.

This was the kind of attitude I hoped the Wii and DS would kill.

And the cost increase that come with those graphics will come at the cost of content, because we've already see it happen.

Most of the normal gamers are excited, honestly...

It's not because some games enjoy more crisp detail that others have to! Gee. Take the Endless Ocean video, and give it HD. You'd have to be really stubborn not to see the potential improvement. You're preaching to the choir, I've enjoyed my retro games like crazy, but I do also enjoy my HD! Metroid Prime in HD would be totally insane. That doesn't get you excited?

Nintendo is a beast, they've done cutting edge in the past. It's not because you have cutting edge that you have to have bleeding costs. There's a balance there!

The cutting edge this time is more expensive and time consuming than in the past. Development costs and times are inflated.

And player fun is often a second consideration over a developer's vision, or for just copying an established hit as it's too risky to experiment.

Basically this direction heralds more games like Other M and Heavy Rain, which are not mainstream hits, and games this expensive need the mainstream more than ever. But financial reports show the mainstream does NOT like this direction. And just because Nintendo gets involved doesn't mean the mainstream will, as they dropped Nintendo the last time they went anywhere near this direction (and I like the Gamecube, but I can see why it wasn't a hit).

Heavy Rain was a mainstream hit.

No. 1.73 million is not mainstream. Not when about a third was the opening week and it had to drag itself to this total. Since it didn't have legs, it means the sales were based on hype, not the actual game.

Yes, that applies to Wii games, so this isn't trying to make PS3 or 360 games look bad, as a number of their games have legs, while several Wii games are flashes in the pan. So was Heavy Rain, as much as Other M. But games like Just Dance and Dance Central (1.97 million, but in far less time) keep selling, as those are things the mainstream likes.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I heard when Nintendo makes the models and all that for their games, they are made in high res. Then they process them to be played on the Wii. So I've heard.

Most of all I'm intrested to see what Retro Studios would be able to do with current hi-end hardware, DKCR already looked better than many HD games imo. (Not to mention how stunning Metroid Prime was for its time). As for games I think Metroid and Zelda will benefit the most. I'm curious too see how they will improve Smash Bros and Mario 3D, those looked already perfect on Wii imo. Mario Kart Wii (graphically) on the other hand was disappointing mostly because it didn't run 60fps on 3/4 players split-screen.

I think i want to see Pikmin in HD most right now.

After that, I completely agree that Nintendo need to start changint their franchises to suit new graphical potential, and I think games like Kid Icarus, Starfox, Metroid and F Zero are perfect for this treatment.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I for one am looking forward to 720p, although I'm not liking the idea of having to spend on a big ass TV.

Most Nintendo games I've played to this date haven't had more than 4p... How I will fit such a humongous set in my apartment to allow for this massive split-screen is beyond me...

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

That the thing, right. Some games appeal to one market while others appeal to another. Heavy Rain appeals to a more vocal crowd, Mario Kart appeals to a more consumer crowd. But both are fundamental to success.

As for the fun side of things, that's why I was mentioning balance. I believe that HD in Nintendo's hands will be used to enhance the experience as a whole, not ruin it, just like it did in the past with the N64 and Gamecube, with the cutting edge of the time. Never did Nintendo overuse it (I find). Some games will really benefit from HD too, as megaman79 mentioned.

No. Only one is fundamental to success, as it sold far, far more, and took far less time and money to make. The other kind of game is only about stroking the egos of game developers and the egos of gamers who want desperately for games to be elveted to legitmate art.

It will certainly put Nintendo in contention with the MS & Sony.  Hoepfully all 3 are similarly powered next gen so itll come down to who has the best games and features.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

Ratchet & Clank PS3 anyone? I think their adventure games wil have similar visuals (better due to hw).

Anyway the games im interested in don't necesserily ask for superb textures :P I want a Paper Mario and new DKC, as well as a 2D  Mario Platforming.
