Forums - Sales - PS3 may never catchup to the 360

jjseth said:
It's just a matter of time before the PS3 passes by the 360. The 360 is already losing steam and the PS3 is gaining ground. Call the PS3 a failure because you happen to think that because there have been a few models out already to replace original launch equipment. The PS2 was very much the same way with releasing updated PS2's at a frequent rate. The reason they do that is because they find cost savings by shrinking down parts and components, they can remove some things that doesn't affect gaming with PS3 games.

It just seems like it's much more drastic because Sony has HD's that are in these consoles now and that can be a good way to market the system. The ps2 had what? 12 different versions in it's life cycle? Or it may have been more, but nobody complained and stated that "The PS2 is dying and nobody is buying it!!" like they are for the PS3.

This has got to be a joke.

Not only did you just say that a hardware revision is the same as a new SKU, but you also claimed that the SKUs are the reason people are calling the PS3 a dying system. Thats all kinds of stupid.

@Pasenger

The problem though is that I can't get the same experience for cheaper. I have yet to see a 360 title that impresses me more than Uncharted, Ratchet, OR heavenly sword :/

With MS's latest killer exclusive Mass Effect, I played it, and was not technically impressed. I was not wow'ed in the least. Then I think about games like GT5 on the horizon running 1080p, 60 FPS, and supporting 16 cars online? The sad thing is, I would say Assassins creed is probably the best looking game I've seen on the 360, and thats multi-plat :( Keep in mind I have played Gears of War, Halo 3, Bioshock AND Mass Effect.

Broken promises are one thing, notoriously horrible hardware is another :( Getting your box fixed in European country's has been a major hastle from what I've heard and isn't so easily remedied. Microsoft will be fighting the uphilll battle in Europe/Japan, and to be honest I don't think thats a fight they're prepared for. They will do great in America though :P

Looks are not everything, you would think you would know that since uncharted, HS, and ratchet all look fantastic yet are below ME and other lesser looking games.

Ahh but see the quality of the game isn't in question here. We were talking about "technical showpieces" or "getting the same experience for cheaper" on the other console. So far I haven't seen anything the PS3 couldn't handle that the 360 puts out, yet I have seen things that go above and beyond what the 360 can on the PS3. From a technical standpoint the PS3 has the advantage. Game ratings are one thing, but putting two consoles side by side with their showpieces is more or less what I'm talking about here.

Unfortunately, PS3 worshippers are using old data to predict a future outcome. Yes, folks love the PS brand, but this is a new generation and saying the PS3 will beat the 360 because the PS2 beat the Xbox is insane.

Let's look at this in business terms - the PS3, in the period of a year, dropped 2-3 SKUs (if you count the Euro 60gb PS3 with limited BC), had 2-3 price cuts and introed 3 new SKUs to try and generate sales. Now that the holidays are here and folks are more than generous to spend money on gifts and Sony supporters are declaring victory. Sorry, but your console is what ... 7 million units behind. Wake me up with your rants when it's knocking on the Wii's door.

Any product that goes through 3 deleted skus, 2 price cuts and 3 new skus WITHIN ITS FIRST YEAR is a failure. It was rolled out without a true plan and absolutely no commitment to success. Sony did all of that in the PS3's first year because it wasn't producing the awesome results it was expecting.

And to think - the 360 is still selling consoles. Of course it's going to lose market share - it started at 100 percent, and I guess it's uphill from there.

Sony fanbots should just admit - this is a small start, but Sony's gotta brainwash a whole lotta folks AND stop the 360 from selling to dominate. And then, there's the Wii.

As much as folks wanna call me an Xbot, I am looking at the entire situation for the result. And the truth is, the 360 and PS3 are fighting for second. Even if the Wii is a bust, there's enough hype to leave it in first place for a long, long time.

And another reason the PS3 is in a bad position - true, folks are buying PS3s and anticipating a flood of games. What if those games keep getting delayed ... and delayed ... and delayed? Will you continue to say 'I am satisfied with this mediocre game' or just throw in the towel? Sony hasn't learned jack about pleasing customers. And sadly, most customers are so blinded by Sony they will buy a product from them without doing any research whatsoever.

And let's not forget the bottom line - getting paid. Will Sony do more fire sales to stay in the hunt? They are gaining market share, but losing tons of money on the *cheapiest* BR player on the market ... and it PLAYS GAMES!

Sony fans - enjoy this seasonal bump - and don't be shocked when sales for the PS3 plummet like a lead balloon.

So your angry that Sony fans are positive?

There not bashing other consoles and other fanboys like you just did. All they are doing is saying we doing ok and that pisses you off for some reason.

No, I am not pissed off at all. What I am saying is - folks are declaring victory and the battle hasn't begun. It would be sooo funny if the PS3 was leading all the consoles, but it's not even a strong 3rd place holder currently. Sure, it can change, but from what I have seen on several forums all over the Web, PS3 fanboys are quick to condemn the 360 - state these default arguments - the 360 has no built-in wifi, 33% failure rate, no high def player and costs $60 a year to play on LIVE. And that's not just here - that's universal. When you buy a PS3, are you required to learn that creed?

Is it like the Manchurian Candidate chant? "Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life." - just replace a few words: "The PS3 has built-in wifi, a high-definition player, free online multiplayer and the best gaming experience on the planet."

I just love reading from posters passionate about the PS3. It's so much fun! The Wii folks will laugh and the 360 boys will rant some, but not like die-hard PS3 bots. Based on that alone, and knowing I'll be online with those same folks, I would rather stick with the LIVE bunch or game online with my Wii.

Sorry but that is a load of rubbish, for every demented ps3 fanboy their is a nintendo or xbox360 one. The ps3 has made great improvements compared to what it was doing and now sells on par with what the 360 does. Looking into the future the ps3 has the best games coming out so why shouldn't people be enthuiastic for it.

technical showpieces it may be, but it could easily be possible that the games themselves suffered from them. Each of these "technical showpieces" were very short (dont know how long ratchet is though....) Actually we dont know what the 360 can handle, no one is trying to push the hardware. IF gears of war does not top it you might be able to say that, so far weve only had sony developers state that its not possible on the 360.

Qaulity is not visuals, its overall the game. Qaulity is going to be everything combined it is why the quality of the 360s is higher, hence the higher scores.

If 360 were to have a showcase i would play that with you, but it doesnt. All the games are not 6-10 hours (cept halo but thats mult based) and are big time games that are not multiplatform. Games like COD look great on the 360, and im sure we can get more.

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

I am very for them and the system ( will eventually own one) i just hate it when they start declaring sony domination because of these games.

It has just im sick of OMG ps3 is gaining and will overtake 360! somg no one cares, nor is it likely.

There's absolutely no point in arguing with someone who won't see from another person's viewpoint. I can see the PS3's saving graces, but I also see it realistically. You have little to no proof that the Sony will continue upward after the holidays. Based on ... what? Re-read some old Game Informer mags and listen to them talk about the availablity of the PS3 vs. the Wii/360 console drought. And not just them, but the Electronic Gaming Monthly edition with the smashed tomato on the cover.

It's really a show of desparation on your part. You are clinging - and I use that term sparingly - to a morsel of info. So what it's selling more than the 360. Sure, 100K is really, really going to chip away at a 7M plus lead. When the 360 is getting beat handedly in all regions, sure, I'll admit it. But it's not - and barely beating the 360 by 100K overall. Sorry, but it's the holidays and the 40gb is really appealing to euro gamers. Ok ... but are you convinced the PS3 will maintain the slim lead it has on the 360? Will you retreat in silence when folks pull this thread back out to flash in your face when your statements are false?

And you really, really have a lot of confidence in a company who's squandered the massive gains it earned in the PS1-PS2 generations. It's a shell of what it used to be. And the PS isn't even a PS with *core values.* It's nothing more than a cheap attempt by Sony to get back into this next-gen race. That's it. I mean, Sony had the nerve to get more folks to buy PS3 games - and removed the BC to get it done. Forget that. I won't have a company prod me to buy something when they want me to unless they give it to me.

I'd guess most 360 owners did not own an Xbox

MS has maybe SOME relevance to Sony seeing as how most 3rd-party games are available on both platforms. And usually better made on the 360. Sony maybe should care about that.

Do you have a source for this? I had an Xbox first, then a PS2 because I couldn't play GTA 3. I bought a 360 and have no plans currently to buy a PS3 until they bring back full BC. If that means I'll have to hit a local pawn shop or never get a PS3, I can live with that.
