Who is the 3DS "losing" to at the moment?

it's losing the the 3DS that we assumed to supposedly flying off the shelves.

And the hardware sales charts keep showing it dropping in place. In EMAA this week, it's behind all the 7th gen systems.

Well, last week, the Wii and 3DS were nearly in the same position, and it all comes down to software, period.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times... If  3DS exclusive Mario, Pokemon, and Touch Generation games fail to spur hardware sales, then there is a serious problem. Until then, there is no cause for concern.

If there is the possibility, that is cause for concern. That word just means caution and worry, not that something definite is causing it.

Cut the price?.......your joking right. Can people really not understand that there are no good games yet for the 3DS? As soon as the major titles are released, the 3DS will take off again

It doesn't work that way. I know this, because the same thing was insisted about the N64 and Gamecube (even I said it, but now I realize it was wishful thinking).

It's not about a bunch of games, but that the mainstream hits are more prominent than games that are not, no matter how much a non-mainstream game sells. Super Mario 64-style games sell, but compared to Classic Mario games, they are not mainstream. Ocarina and its follow ups sold well, but it's not a mainstream game when seen against the sales of the Wii Sports games.

And what two are being released this year, while the other two haven't been announced?

IMO the 3DS is too expensive atm, it costs more than a PS3. A price cut would definitely send it into first place.

Nintendo will definately wait and see what more compelling software does for sales before moving to a price cut

Not untill they've seen what the NGP can do, thats for sure. July to Sep. 2012 at the earliest.

The price is too high, but its not that high when you consider the price of competitive devices (Iphone, NGP, etc).

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

They're currently profiting like $150 from each 3DS sold at retail. That's a lot of money, and they can easily afford a $50 cut if needed.

Price Cut and Mario Kart 3DS combo for the Holidays...

3DS will have the best Holiday season ever.

Yeah but Carl, Nintendo think price cuts are bad for the consumer!

It's common knowlegde that Nintendo purposely priced the 3DS a lot higher than they would have done normally (before this current gen), because they learned their lesson from Wii's launch, when it was sold out for ages and they could've made a ton more money had they priced it higher.

So, Nintendo *could* easily lower 3DS' price and still make a healthy profit. Whether they'll do that remains to be seen, too early to tell now. If sales remain below expectations after more compelling software comes out (stuff like Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, whatever) and/or NGP poses a real threat later on, they probably will. For now, no-one knows. Imo if NGP comes out at a competitive pricepoint, Nintendo will lower 3DS' price, no sweat.

I hope so. I won't touch a 3DS right now because even with game a $250 price tag is just too much to pay considering the thing doesn't seem to bring much new to the table yet.

I want one eventually.

You would have thought now that Iwata would have realised that milking your userbase for as long as possible doesn't really help your HW sales... Or the consumer
